Astrid Monroig CO 201-06 Dr. Watson Introductory Speech Self-Evaluation September 16, 2015 How did I feel as I spoke to my classmates? As I spoke to my classmates I felt anxious and frightened. Even though I had previous public speaking experiences as a Youth Society director during several years this introductory speech was the first actual time that I spoke to a English speaking audience. What things did my classmates do/say during and after my speech that were helpful? Unhelpful? My classmates feedback was very encouraging, inclusive a couple of them told me they like my question about my interviewee temperament type. They said it was a very interesting fact. On the other hand, I would like to mention that while I was giving my presentation I liked my classmate respectfulness because they did not laugh in any of the times I probably pronounced a word wrong. However, I personally did not liked the lack of enthusiasm that the person was announcing the names had. What was my general reaction to the introductory activity? I enjoyed greatly introducing someone else. Typically we introduce ourselves to the classroom, but actually someone who can present the best of us to the rest of the classroom is a wonderful task that also serve as a great icebreaker. Speech Evaluation Strengths: What do I feel that I did well? With respect to the content of my speech I liked my introduction because I started pointing out the artistic characteristics of my interviewee. For instance, when I said: "I am going to present a guitarist, a singer and actress...". The majority of the classroom looked at me with intrigued eyes. On the other hand, I organized my speech in a very simple way to keep the audience interest. Besides, in order to change from one topic of the speech to another I used highlighted index cards. For this reason was easy to keep my outline on track because I was able to spot quickly the information that I wanted to pointed out. Besides, with relation to my speech's delivery I used the required extemporaneous method and I used note cards or prompts to guide me from point to point, although using my own words to go along with the speech. Challenges: What do I wish I had done differently? While I was watching the video of my presentation several points that need to be improved showed up immediately. First, with respect to the delivery I should avoid for future speeches filler words like “umm" or "ahh". Also with respect to the content I feel I should have prepared a stronger conclusion because in the last minutes of my speech is not difficult to notice the lack of transition from the body of the speech to the conclusion. I believe the organization of my speech was pretty well, however, I would like to have some humoristic points in my speech to keep the audience relax and engage like other of my classmates did. Changes: What will I do differently as I prepare for my next speech that will help me to improve? Even though I projected my voice well, in the video I notice that I was speaking not loud enough. Besides, there were two times when I looked down at the paper checking my progress for two long. As I was preparing myself for the delivery part I promise myself not create too much hands gestures like I always do when I talk, because I was heading to a US audience and I know here in America people do not use their hands when they talk constantly. However, I exaggerated a little bit and was too static. On the content part I want to improve the syntaxis of my phrases in order to appeal at a more complex college vocabulary. Finally, for the organization sections I want to add a more dynamic outline to identify more my audience and even make them laugh at least one time.
