Purpose -The purposes of this research are to examine the extent to which daughters view their mothers as consumption role models, the extent to which daughters serve as consumption role models for their mothers, and the extent to which external role models are shared by mothers and their adolescent daughters. Design/methodology/approach -Two qualitative studies focused on mothers-adolescent daughters-vicarious role models interactions as drivers of consumption behaviors in Western cultures. Study 1 included 20 in-depth interviews with mothers and their adolescent daughters (conducted separately). Study 2 included five of the original dyads interviewed jointly and observed in fashion stores. Findings -Regarding adolescent daughters' use as role models and fashion markers for their mothers, most mothers confirmed that their adolescent daughters' fashion opinion was very important. Second, based on consumer socialization arguments, mothers served as role models for their adolescent daughters. Most dyads shop for fashion items together and in the same stores. Regarding the issue of cognitive versus chronological ages, the studies suggest that there is a gap between mothers' cognitive and chronological ages in support of cognitive age theory and the youthfulness ideal of Western cultures. Notably, such a gap mostly failed to materialize for adolescent daughters. Hence, consumption similarity appears to be driven more by the gap for mothers than the gap for daughters. Finally, external role models such as celebrities did not have a great influence on mothers or their adolescent daughters. Originality/value -The research used in-depth interviews with and in-store observation of mothers and adolescent daughters. Future research might use similar interviews with younger daughters. Another extension of the work reported here that can provide triangulation for the findings is to change from a qualitative to a quantitative methodology.
Religion in the Roman Empire, 2018
The article starts by discussing the fundamental question of why it is possible and important to speak about religious change, why religions have a history (1). The subsequent section is arguing about a conceptualisation of religion that focuses on religious agency. This allows us to speak about religious change and invites us to present that discussion in the form of a narrative (2). The decisions entailed by the option for a historical narrative are discussed in the following section (3), that is the object of that narrative, the locus of change, and its driving forces. Here the question of historical agents and the relationship of ‘lived religion’ to ‘civic religion’ takes centre stage. Finally, I discuss why ‘belief ’ does not figure in book "Pantheon" (4) and why it focuses exclusively on ‘knowledge’ instead. A brief paragraph on further perspectives (5) tries to give substance to the book’s promise for opening up further discussion.

In the extensive meaning of interior spaces interrogating architectural quality and the experience of people inhabiting built spaces, it is the aim of this text to contribute to the reflection about interiors' atmospheric quality. Interiors referring to the sensorial qualities a space sends out have impact in the subjective representation of the space and in the individual use of it. The projects of the contemporary Spanish born designer Patricia Urquiola (°1961) invite to a discussion about design of interiors aiming to conceive spaces with atmospheric quality that express identity. This text addresses from a phenomenological approach three different examples of different typologies and architectural programmes: Casa Moroso, Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Missoni Stores in Milan and Paris. The text concludes that the original achievement of these projects voice the relevance of creating interiors as empathic sceneries of spaces recognized from its identity character and image. It stresses that interior architecture takes a key role in creating places that emphasize architecture as a human experience of atmospheres.

States have created systemic road networks in the lands under their control in order to strengthen transportation and facilitate their control. In the Ottoman Empire, roads are mainly divided into three as right, middle and left paths in Anatolia and Rumelia. In the Ottoman Empire, the center's contact and official communication with the countryside was carried out through various structures in different periods of the reign through main and secondary roads. These structures listed until the XIX. century as ulak hükmü, system of menzilhanes, in'am hükmü, kiracıbaşılık and postal organization. We can obtain informations about the menzils from the official documents, and also menzilnâmes are another sources that give information about menzils, settlements and roads. In this study, first of all, the Anatolian and Rumelian road networks in the Ottoman Empire will be briefly analyzed. Then, the studies in the menzilnâme literature will be examined under four main headings as military menzilnâmes, pilgrimage menzilnâmes, menzilnâmes that the states officials-ulaks used and studies that examine the menzils as an architecturally.
Interdisciplinary Approaches to Semiotics, 2017
Among the Hellenes in archaic “Song culture” it was axiomatic that when the “inspired” aede declaimed “sacred song” (θέσπις ἀοιδή), the voice of the divine itself sounded forth. But what credited such a claim? What property of “melic verse” encoded the voice of the Gods? Pursuant to what semiotic rationale? To answer these questions this article looks at (1) what counted as the “divine” for the early Hellenes, (2) how the “inspired” aede was able to “source” it, (3) how he made it afford intelligence about cosmopoiesis and ontogenesis and, finally, (4) how he gave this intelligence an expression that was legible to his listeners. The case is made that information about cosmopoiesis was encoded in the melodies and meter that accompanied the ordinary words in the verse the aede composed and performed. The semiotic rationale behind this claim was a mimetic correspondence between (i) the “arithmological character” of the melodies and rhythms structuring the sounds one heard in the song and (ii) the “arithmology” used to quantify the blends of cosmic energies that powered the song’s subject matter into its “complexion” and its Being-in-the-world. As a result, listening to “sacred song” amounted to hearing two narratives about the object of the song:- one in the “profane”, ordinary words of mortals recounting what it means "sub species hominis", the other in melody and metre relating its “sacral”, "cosmopoietic" significance. Key words Archaic Melic Verse; Sacred Song; Hieroglossia; Semiotics and Mousiké; Encoding environmental affordance; Semiotics and Arithmology

When I was a student my best strategy to learn was to take notes. For instance, in history I used to find and underline the key points, using arrows and marking in red or other colors the information that I considered to be important. In foreign languages I used to make lists of words in alphabetical order and I used to read a lot of foreign literature to approach the language that I intended to learn. That is to say, I had realized that I could assimilate quicker and better text or vocabulary by writing and looking at schemas. Usually, the activities that attract most students' attention are those that encourage collaboration between students and brainstorming, such as debates between different groups of students. Other worth mentioning activities are those that use role play and humorous dialogues between students. In addition, a certain type of activity commonly seen in class is related to biographical presentations of various personalities. Students, according to their preferences, select a famous person to present using PowerPoint, videos and picture illustrated books to support their work. Seeing that every one learns through a variety of learning strategies and methods we must take into consideration the differentiated instruction and its application in the classroom. Not everybody learns the same way and some students require special attention to reach a certain level of knowledge. We should reinforce the abilities of the learners and try to detect and overcome their weaknesses.
