La patología tiroidea supone un reto diagnóstico en el anciano, ya que su presentación clínica, con signos y síntomas inespecíficos, es con frecuencia atribuida a otras enfermedades o al proceso normal de envejecimiento. Al mismo tiempo, los tests de función tiroidea pueden ser erróneamente interpretados en presencia de procesos agudos intercurrentes, patología crónica o uso de medicación. El retraso en su diagnóstico y tratamiento puede tener consecuencias graves y no recuperables en el anciano y suponer en ocasiones un riesgo vital.

Los hipercírculos constituyen una clase especial de curvas que aparecen cuando se analiza el cuerpo de parametrización de una parametrización racional de una curva algebraica. El objetivo de este trabajo es el estudio de este tipo de curvas. De forma más precisa, después de introducir el concepto de hipercículo y de estudiar sus propiedades básicas, se muestra como se clasifican los hipercículos bajo distintos criterios y se establecen sus principales propiedades geométricas. Asimismo, se estudia la relación existente entre las tres principales representaciones de un hipercírculo: ecuaciones implícitas, parametrizaciones racionales y unidades generadoras. Porúltimo, se muestra también la aplicación de este tipo de curvas al problema de encontrar una reparametrización algebraicamenteóptima de una curva racional.

The Presence of water droplets on a polluted outdoor high voltage insulator surface modifies the electric field flux and the equipotential distribution along the insulator surface. The present work describes a detailed numerical computation of the electric field distribution in the surroundings of water droplet on a polluted insulator surface. The computations are carried out using the Femlab package 3.4, which is based on the finite element analysis (FEA) method. The parameters used in the numerical analysis are the contact angle and number of water droplets. Detailed plots of the electric field distribution in the inter electrode space are generated. The results show that the electric field gradually increases and reaches stabilization with diminishes of contact angle while the volume of water droplet is changeless. The electrical field around the water droplets on the model insulator evidently changes when single or multi-water droplets are put on the surface. Reciprocity of water droplets further enhances the electrical field when multi-water droplets are put on the model insulator.

In sample surveys sometimes one encounters a situation where, for many sampling units, one or more variables of interest are valued zero or negligibly low while for some other units they are substantial because of heavy localization of the high-valued units in certain segments. Estimation may then be inaccurate if a chosen sample fails to capture enough of the high-valued units. In such situations, adaptive sampling, as an extension of the initial sample to capture additional high-valued units, may be more serviceable. However, the size of an adaptive sample may often far exceed that of the initial sample. In this paper we present a method to put desirable constraints on the adaptive sample-size to keep the latter in check. To examine the efficacy of this method, we illustrate its application to estimate total numbers of rural earners through specific vocations in a given district in India simultaneously for several vocations.

The standard approach to study symmetric Hopf bifurcation phenomenon is based on the usage of the equivariant singularity theory developed by M. Golubitsky et al. In this paper, we present the equivariant degree theory based method which is complementary to the equivariant singularity approach. Our method allows systematic study of symmetric Hopf bifurcation problems in non-smooth/non-generic equivariant settings. The exposition is focused on a network of eight identical van der Pol oscillators with hysteresis memory, which are coupled in a cube-like configuration leading to S 4 -equivariance. The hysteresis memory is the source of non-smoothness and of the presence of an infinite dimensional phase space without local linear structure. Symmetric properties and multiplicity of bifurcating branches of periodic solutions are discussed in the context showing a direct link between the physical properties and the equivariant topology underlying this problem.
