Blain and Sandra L. Blinn, Maple Creek Media. 34 pages. $14.00. ISBN-13: 978-0-9837967-5-6. Available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Follett Library Resources This interesting concise paperback is not for a ‘bona fide’ research diatomist, but was written for older elementary and middle school students. This book presents a general overview of what diatoms are, where they are found, the part they play in the food chain and how they help in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It also discusses how diatoms are used in understanding lake histories, using the example of acid rain, and finishes with a summary of how diatoms are used commercially. It has numerous © 2013 The International Society for Diatom Research illustrations that aid in the explanation of the text. I used it to show my young grandchildren what their grandmother was doing. If you work with students who plan to become science teachers in the lower and middle grades, I would recommend that they take a look at this little book. Thanks to its format, it could be used as a class science lesson, where students go out a collect brown slime, bring it back to school and examine it using the microscope. What a better way to get students interested in our field of study. © 2013 Karen K. Serieyssol 1113 East 6th Street, Coal Valley, IL 61240, USA
