Christian discipleship utilizing intentional belief formation that incorporates scripture and cognitive-behavioral theory.
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy, 2012
W e are grateful for the opportunity to respond to Robert Gleave' s (2012) article "Gospel Centered 'Therapist' or Gospel Centered 'Therapy': Is There a Difference, and Does It Matter?" In our view, there is much to commend in this article. We appreciate Dr. Gleave' s invitation to Latter-day Saint (LDS) mental health professionals to continue a dialogue that started approximately 50 years ago concerning how the gospel of Jesus Christ might appropriately shape the practice of counseling and psychotherapy (Swedin, 2003). There is not space to comment on each of Dr. Gleave' s points in our response; instead we will briefly discuss several topics upon which his article encouraged us to reflect .
The counseling process seeks to provide a fountain of resources for the needy believer who finds his or her self-enmeshed in some inevitable changes associated with growing up in life generally. Since the spiritual life is a pivot in which other department of life revolves, the average believer over times seeks succor and in the warm interaction with an older more experienced believer who had been more acquainted with the road map of the kingdom of God. Of work, the Christian counselor may not be a guru but his training and inherence exposure by the vicissitudes of life equipped him or her with functional knowledge and experience coupled with the enablement of the Holy Spirit, the Christian counselor furnishes the needy believer with an avalanche of remedies that presents a ready balm to many a social or emotional as well as spiritual malaise. Dispensed in an enabling environment, these interactions that take place between a counselor and counselee provides a firm launching pad for the growth of the individual believer and the church universally ability to face new challenges and to tap the sources of renewal is one of the secrets of Christianity's growth. The way forward usually meant a studied look back ward, back to the image of God revealed in the story of Jesus. Christians have always considered the age of Jesus and his apostles a kind of model for all the other ages. It gave to the church its faith in Jesus, the resurrected Messiah, and the hope of forgiveness of sins through him. And the Age demonstrated in the life of Paul, that the gospel of grace recognizes no boundaries of nation, race, sex, or culture.
Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, 2010
Professional psychologists may be asked about Christian counseling services and wonder how to best respond. Given the diversity of methods and worldviews that might be considered Christian counseling, it is important for psychologists to understand some of the major approaches used. Biblical counseling, pastoral counseling, Christian psychology, Christian ministry, and other approaches are described briefly, and in each case implications for professional psychologists are offered. Collaborative efforts are likely to be productive when interacting with certified pastoral counselors and Christian psychologists, and ministry approaches may provide supplemental resources for psychotherapy with Christian clients. Ethical issues are considered, and a 5-step model for responding to questions about Christian counseling is offered.

A TRAINING CURRICULUM BASED ON THE FIVE STEP HEALING MODEL AT VINEYARD OF HARVEST CHURCH, WALNUT, CALIFORNIA Howard Tien-Hoy Hsieh, D.Min. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2015 Faculty Supervisor: Dr. Brian J. Vickers The purpose of this project is to develop and teach a training curriculum based on the Five Step Healing Model at Vineyard of Harvest Church in Walnut, California. Chapter 1 presents the purpose, goals, context, rationale, definitions, limitations, and research methodology of the project. Chapter 2 provides the biblical and theological foundations for Healing Prayer Ministry by examining selected New Testament passages which show (1) Christ taught and trained the twelve and the seventy disciples to heal the sick and free the demonically oppressed. (2) Christ told his disciples that they would do the same type of works (and even greater) than he did in his earthly ministry. (3) In the book of Acts, the Spiritempowered disciples continued the healing and delive...
Psychotherapy, 2021
This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of spiritual change processes by conducting an empirical investigation of clinically meaningful events occurring within the context of a Christian-Integrated Psychotherapy Framework. The discovery phase of task analysis was used to build a rational–empirical model that explicated how clients developed stronger attachments to their God images. A rational model was specified, and five cases were selected for further analysis from a pool of 27 client-participants and 423 video-recorded psychotherapy sessions. Clinical observations and the coding of in-session measures were used to select resolved and unresolved cases, which were then contrasted to create a 10-step rational–empirical model. In this model, clients initially presented with intense feelings of shame, guilt, or helplessness but concluded with heightened levels of love and joy. Clients who reached this resolution all underwent an experience whereby their God images became dynamic, alive, intimate, and authentic. Results are discussed, and implications for the existence of an in vivo God image and corrective emotional spiritual experiences are introduced. Specifically, corrective emotional spiritual experiences appear to have influenced clients to transition from being insecurely attached to more securely attached to their in vivo God images.
