Dystopian Silim by Gods explores the unsettling side of AI’s potential rise, offering a sceptical perspective that challenges us to consider the paths we are paving with each step toward an AI-driven future.
Philosophy and Society, 2024
Building on earlier work engaging with the entanglement of artificial intelligence (AI) and apocalypticism and both with whiteness (Ali 2019), in the present essay I explore AI through the lens of a political theology informed by critical race theory and decolonial thought. The essay begins by setting out the meaning of a few key concepts, viz. AI, political theology, ‘The World’, and the apocalyptic, before going on to consider their relationship, and concludes by briefly sketching an oppositional stance that I suggest is appropriate to adopt in relation to AI where the latter is understood as a manifestation of racialised political theology.
The aim of this paper is to analyze a contemporary sci-fi text, River of Gods (2004) by Ian McDonald that tackles the topic of qualities, which the con-temporary visionaries attribute to the sentient – or ‘strong’ – AI. Drawing from phenomenology combined with cultural analysis, this paper focuses on the na-ture, values and beliefs of the depicted AIs, and the ideas that presuppose them. The relation between humans and AIs is finally set as that between gods-creators and gods-powerful beings opening the reader for uncommon ways of understanding our relation to the recurring dream of artificial intelli-gence.

A book review of Dan McQuillan's book Resisting AI.
This article deals with impact of internet and technology on human-beings. Hypothetically, it aims to show how we are leading towards an age in which machines will take the control. It is hoped that its unconventional presentation, meditative nature and predictions will motivate readers to research further on this issue. It surveys briefly the history of development and progress of humans. Very miserly, it describes the human journey from ancient age to the age of artificial intelligence. "Today, the world is in the midst of an extraordinary over pouring of scientific work on the mind and brain, on the processes of thinking and learning, on

AI or Artificial Intelligence, beyond technical and scientific application, is one of the most common grounds of technological ideas explored in science fiction films as well as cyberpunk novels. Contemporary science fiction films and novels offer technological adventures where the boundary of human fantasies, adventures and romances interfuse with technological future which tends to blur the age-old conflict between science and religious belief. Blending with visions of science and technology, many of these science fiction films and novels portrait fantasies or quests (for salvation, immortality, overcoming physical illness, innovation, power etc.) as posthuman crises of a post human dystopia while this posthuman condition also offers determinations for transcending any earthly limitations of human existence. This paper intends to explore artificial intelligence within the area of popular science fiction novels and films, which incorporates the fantasy of techno-salvation in the near future of singularity through overcoming the carbon limitations of human, fusing essence of spirituality with technology as well as extending spiritual beliefs into technological faith. Investigating fictional depiction of “Artificial Intelligence” as a transhuman or posthuman idea in science fictions, the paper tries to trace out the potential patterns of technological salvation for humankind while it does also find humanizing or dehumanizing elements in these science fictions about the problematic and politicized power relations of binaries like human/machine or human/non-human. This paper is conducted through qualitative research, especially operating within textual analysis of William Gibson’s cyberpunk novel Neuromancer and visual methodology incorporating some contemporary sci-fi films like Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), Alex Proyas’ I,Robot (2004), Wachowski Brothers’ The Matrix (1999), José Padilh’s Robocop (2014) and Wally Pfister’s Transcendence (2014). Therefore, the paper contends that artificial intelligence, as a posthuman entity in popular science fiction and films, integrates the fantasy of techno-salvation where technology is fused with spirituality extending spiritual beliefs into technological faith. Thus, it tries to destabilize traditional concepts of spiritual beliefs; and at the same time, re-appreciates and re-appropriates the spiritual ideas of omnipotence, heaven, immortality etc. through better comprehending of science and technology.

In this article, three very different types of visions are explored, through reviews of three recent books that deal with the future of AI: Novacene: The Coming Age of Hyperintelligence (by James Lovelock), Humanity’s Last Stand: The Challenge of Artificial Intelligence – A Spiritual-Scientific Response (by Nicanor Perlas), and Artificial Intelligence: Modern Magic or Dangerous Future (by Yorick Wilks). The books are not necessarily representative of any stream of thought, which would indeed be very difficult, given the wide variety of approaches even between sub-groups of a larger current like, for example, transhumanism. But each of the three books does seem to embody one of what we view as three big types of attitudes towards the potential advancements in AI. One of them is a radical kind of optimism ("marry"). This usually manifests as either a belief that AI cannot be anything other than hugely beneficial, or as an acceptance that the emergence of intelligent robots is nothing but a natural step in a higher cosmic order of evolution. Another approach stands at the opposite end of the spectrum, raising desperate alarms that new technologies will break society apart, or, even more severely, that “we are summoning the demon”, and that AI will eventually turn against us, leading to our extinction ("avoid"). Finally, the third attitude is one of moderation and cautious optimism, acknowledging the potential transformative power of AI for good or worse, but being less radical in both the enthusiasm and the concern ("snog").

Artificial intelligence (A.I.) poses a challenge to the domains of religion, culture, technology, and economics. While many have predicted great promise from A.I. there are likewise others who have warned of its potential for danger. Hollywood has not been shy about producing its own image of the potential of A.I. more often siding with A.I.-pessimists over A.I.-optimists. However, a significantly different image of artificial intelligence is found in Spike Jonez’s film Her. While Her gained acclaim for its intriguing story and superlative acting, its religious implications have not been considered. In this essay, I will argue that artificial intelligence has significant religious ramifications. The vision of A.I. most often portrayed by both thinkers and film is one that has several of the characteristics of a monotheistic god, and most often one who is wrathful, punishing, and anti-human. This perspective is inspired by the themes of Christian apocalypticism. I will contrast this with an analysis of the movie Her. I will suggest that Her presents a different vision of the possible future of A.I., one which still involves the creation of divinity, but no longer a singular divinity bent on apocalyptic wrath, instead, Her envisions a new divine pantheon leading to different religious results but not without its own problems.
