Null Expletive Subjects in Telugu Clauses

2023, Indian Linguistics

The phenomenon of null subjects has garnered considerable attention due to its complexity in various languages. Telugu, being one such intricate language, has received limited scholarly investigation on this topic. Despite being a fully-fledged null subject language with robust verbal agreement, certain instances such as negatives, modals, and embedded clauses lack such agreement. Telugu allows for different types of null subjects, including referential, expletive, and arbitrary, in both root and embedded contexts. Various expletive types, such as quasi-referential, extraposition, presentational, and impersonal, are to be examined in relation to null subjects. This paper aims to analyze and account for Telugu expletives within the minimalist framework, taking into account recent proposals. Additionally, it seeks to explore null expletive subjects in both root and embedded contexts, considering their syntactic and semantic interpretations.
