This thesis proposes a theory of cartographic abstraction as a framework for investigating cartographic viewing, and does so through engaging with a series of contemporary artworks concerned with cartographic ‘ways of seeing’ (Berger 1972). Cartographic abstraction is a material modality of thought and experience that is produced through cartographic techniques of depiction. It is the more-than-visual register that posits and produces the ‘cartographic world’, or what John Pickles has called the ‘geo-coded world’ (2006). By this I mean the naturalized apprehension of the earth as a homogeneous space that is naturally, even necessarily, understood as regular, consistent and objective. I argue for identifying cartographic techniques of depiction as themselves abstract, and cartographic abstraction as such as the modality of thought and experience that these techniques produce. Abstraction within capitalism comes to be socially real and material, taking place outside thought. I propose...
This article aims at discussing the concept of biliteracy from a heteroglossic view of language (GARCÍA, 2009). This view advocates the notion of linguistic repertoire (BUSCH, 2012, 2015) to the detriment of the classical divisions of first and second language. From this perspective, we move beyond the notion of biliteracy towards the concept of pluriliteracypractices(GARCÍA; BARTLETT; KLEIFGEN, 2007). From this concept, literacy practices are not only associated with different cultural contexts and social structures, but also with different channels and means of communication.
An intrusion can be defined as an attempt to break into or misuse a computer system. The word "misuse" is broad, and can reflect meaning to something as severe as stealing confidential data to something as minor such as misusing your email system for spam. Today, both the Internet and corporate intranets are simply crawling with people from all walks of life that are continuously trying to test the security of various systems and networks. Some of these people are seeking some sort of intellectual high, while... Preface This paper contains information on the tools and skills a hacker uses to infiltrate computer systems and networks. If you are interested in learning more about how hackers work, and also how to protect your own computers and networks you should consider taking the SANS SEC 504 Hacker Techniques, Exploits and Incident Handling course.
The industrial heritage in Madrid declared as " Cultural Interest ". Its integration in the cultural and tourist offer of the city Abstract: The desindustrialisation process of the Madrid municipality has generated the abandonment of numerous industrial equipments and problems of industrial gaps. This fact has aroused a debate about the value of the industrial heritage as well as their possible uses, more compatible with economic outsourcing of the city. Taking into account this context, the goal of this research is to study how industrial heritage declared " Cultural Interest " is integrated into the cultural offer of the city and how contributes to its tourist dynamization. To achieve these objectives, it was considered essential to combine quantitative and qualitative methodologies that allow obtaining a diagnosis as accurate as possible about the current situation of the industrial heritage protected.

The article analyzes the role of Lenin’s philosophical heritage in the fate of Soviet Marxist sociology over the time span from the Stalin’s “revolution from above” to the Perestroika and collapse of socialism in the USSR. It was established that sociology in the Soviet Union was moving along a trajectory similar to a sinusoid. In general, it faced two ups and downs. These two stages differed from each other quite significantly. At the first stage, sociology was considered a basically theoretical science. Tasks of obtaining empirical data on wellbeing of society and its systems were incumbered upon statistics. They believed that this information is generalized by various social sciences, including sociology. The first stage ended with official recognition of historical materialism by Marxist sociology, but in real teaching practice it was considered a part of Marxist philosophy. Moreover, it was turned into a dogmatic ideological doctrine. The second stage of the development of Marxist sociology in the USSR begins with the revival of interest in the party and state elite for applied empirical information. This happened after the Twentieth Congress of the Communist Party, when elites split into pragmatists and conservatives. Since the early 1960s a public sociological movement materialized in the USSR by establishing sociological laboratories at universities. The most important part in achieving a new Illia F. Kopnin. This scholar presented Marxist philosophy as an open theoretical system, capable of development in accordance with needs of the moment and dialogically open to other philosophical fields. The intrascientific consensus rested on the concept of a three-level structure of Marxist sociology. Mathematization of the discipline was taking place, paving way for a new method of theorizing.
Theory of science and methodology are the pillars on which a social scientist stand when conducting research. Succinctly stated, ontology can be said to be the study of reality, or simply the science or philosophy of being, while epistemology is the study of the nature of knowledge. The former is concerned with the nature of being, while the latter deals with the nature and scope of knowledge. Your ontological position is decisive for the logic behind the methods scientists employ. There are two main scientific traditions, and you as a student of the social sciences choose one of these based on your ontological position. These are positivism and constructivism, and are decisive for the logic for which you base your choice of methods on (this logic is called methodology). Positivism Positivism in general refers to philosophical positions that emphasize empirical data and scientific methods. This tradition holds that the world consists of regularities, that these regularities are detectable, and, thus, that the researcher can infer knowledge about the real world by observing it. The researcher should be more concerned with general rules than with explaining the particular. This tradition can be traced back to Galileo Galilei (1564–1642). In his work Siderius Nuncius (The Starry Messenger) (1610) he made systematic observations of the Moon, the stars, and the moons of Jupiter. His methods stood in contrast to the prevailing approach of that time, that advocated by Aristotle and the Church. Francis Bacon (1561–1626) In the same century Francis Bacon introduced a combination of induction and experiment into science as he wished to combine experience with record keeping, and thus rejected the deductive method of the time. Francis Bacon, and later John Locke and David Hume, provided the basic framework for the modern naturalist tradition. Based on their works theorists have found fuel to their claim that there exists a real world independent of our senses. Modern scientists following the naturalist tradition argue that the regularities of this real world can be experienced through systematic sense perceptions.
Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, 2/3 of the country is covered by sea. But due to many factors a lot of ship accidents occurred every year, and claiming a large number of casualties. Efforts have been done to improve the safety of domestic sea transportation, as the result to be fully compliance to the SOLAS (Safety Of Live At Sea) regulations regarding to the IMO (International Maritime Organization) convention, worsen by varying sea and cargo characteristic, and low educated passengers, they are very vulnerable to accidents. There are so many accidents in sea transportation in Indonesia, especially in 2005-2010 is due to human errors and only a few caused by natural factors and others. Most of the accidents occur due to the low awareness of the aspects of security and safety. Equipment’s and system on board ship, will not remain safe or reliable if they are not maintained. Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) approach is chosen as a risk assessment methodology in this paper to synthesize the potential failure modes and their associated causes for product design, especially in ship diesel engine. In this paper, the study proposes the fuel oil system in the ship diesel engine. Fuel oil system is extremely important system on a ship which is designed to supply clean fuel oil to main engine, diesel generators and emergency diesel generators. FMEA is an effective tool or technique used for identifying possible failures and mitigating their effects. In various life cycle phase of diesel engine, FMEA activities are executed, and detailed FMEA documents are usually used as reference. Design changes can be executed according to the existing FMEA documents, especially for the most dangerous failure modes with high prevention difficulty.
