Pragmatics & Beyond New Series 347, 2024
Without taking a strong theoretical stance on the terminological boundary between ambiguity and vagueness, we suggest that, at least when considered as persuasion devices, they are quite different and almost opposite phenomena. We suggest that vagueness is effectively persuasive in that it can specifically divert epistemic vigilance from questionable or unpleasant contents. Ambiguity, conversely, encodes multiple meanings drawing additional attention to the message. We support such claims through examples from markedly persuasive texts and through the results of a selfpaced reading experiment revealing differences between contextually precise vague expressions (VE), contextually non-precise VE, and precise expressions.
Lo Yoga della Tradizione, 2024
This contribution, like the others already published and those in the drafting phase, is part of the existential path undertaken by the curator. During the experimentation, which he always saw as theoretical speculation and daily operations inextricably linked, two fundamental inspirations emerged and consolidated: Tradition, beyond the forms it takes on as space-time dimensions vary, is unique. Knowing yourself is a long, complex process, fraught with obstacles and failures; progressing on the path is impossible if we do not free ourselves from every form of dogmatism and duality. To go beyond the horizon it is necessary to overcome every boundary, opening up to ever wider dimensions. The Uniqueness of Tradition and Open Systems therefore represent the two pillars that constitute the threshold to be crossed, the watershed between the profane dimension and the superior states of Being. Being manifested in the West, the roots are the great Adepts: Parmenides, Pythagoras, Plato, Plotinus, Pletho. In these times of crisis and degeneration, unfortunately, the complexity of their teaching is largely lost, the continuity of direct transmission from Master to disciple having been interrupted. The fragments that have come down to us, although fundamental, are lacking with respect to the 'operational method'. Since the great crisis of the 1600s, we have witnessed a bifurcation of the path along lines diverging from the Axis-Mundi: the speculative drift and the magical-theurgic one. Having well in mind the risks and deleterious aspects of syncretism, we cannot fail to recognize that only the Eastern Tradition has kept the operating method intact. The Vision of Yoga is an integral part of it. They are personal considerations, the result of experience in all its aspects, both positive and negative. Experience during which we were able to experimentally verify the validity of the teaching of a great Western Adept of our times: René Guénon, whose reading and meditation we propose, as always giving priority to the original source:......

These upsetting emotions are considered both a detriment and an advantage for those seeking liberation from suffering. This ambivalence is reflective of the classical Buddhist conception of distress. The earliest scholastic Buddhist texts (i.e., Abhidharma sources) have sought to resolve the ambivalence surrounding this conception. The Abhidharma texts thus explain precisely how, when, where and for whom distress can prove favorable. By tracing this intellectual endeavor, I examine in this article the systematic and philosophical treatments of distress (saṃvega) in early Buddhist scholasticism. I outline the reasons for considering the experience of distress to be beneficial, unveiling the religious framework within which distress is rendered positive and even essential. My central claim is that early Abhidharma sources conceive of distress as a potential source of energy that facilitates one’s progress on the religious path and determines how rapidly one can understand the truth.

The first part of the paper is devoted to the study and classification of 27 antoniniani and radiate imitations kept at the Gozo Museum of Archaeology. They are what remains of a hoard of about 4,000 coins discovered in a jar at Victoria (Gozo) in 1937. The second and the third parts of the paper try to systematically list the antoniniani and radiate imitations found in Malta during archaeological excavations, or accidentally unearthed, or discovered in some hoards, or kept in the Numismatic National Collection but without a verified Maltese provenance, or simply mentioned in Maltese written sources. The Conclusions propose a model of circulation of official and imitative coins of the second half of the third century AD in Malta that looks like that of southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia.
Law and History Review, 2021
This article examines the intersection between extraterritoriality--privileges afforded to European subjects in the Islamic Mediterranean--and various forms of state membership. To capture the multiplicity and instability of state membership, I introduce the phrase “legal belonging”--a neutral, umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of bonds between individuals and states (usually referred to as subjecthood, nationality, or citizenship). Adopting the methods of global legal history, I look at how laws regulating legal belonging responded to the extraterritorial context of the Mediterranean in both European and Middle Eastern states. In so doing, I offer an alternative to the centrifugal narrative of modernization, which presumes that modern citizenship was invented in Europe and then exported to the Islamic world. Instead, I contend that the evolution of legal belonging on both sides of the Mediterranean developed in response to the challenges and opportunities presented by ext...
