Hello Dr. Chavel

I wanted to let you know that I support you and I support the right of Jews, individually and collectively, to exist, to have a homeland, and to defend themselves from attempts to murder them. Hamas is a terrorist organization that must be removed from power so it cannot continue its campaign of murder and kidnapping. The events of 7 October were a massacre that cannot be justified. The root cause of murder is the murderers. Efforts to compel the cessation of support to Israel are wrong. Efforts to boycott, divest from, or sanction Israel are wrong. It feels silly writing these things, because they seem so self-evident. But I have allowed myself to be ignorant of the depths to which discourse and thought on this topic has sunk.

Hello Dr. Chavel, I wanted to let you know that I support you and I support the right of Jews, individually and collectively, to exist, to have a homeland, and to defend themselves from attempts to murder them. I do not know your feelings on everything that is going on. I don’t know if you agree with everything I say in this email. I don’t even know enough to know if this email will be a help to you. But I wanted to reach out because if the discourse that I have seen on this issue was directed to a group of which I was a part, I would want to know if the public conversation represented the feelings of all my colleagues and students. I want you to know that the public conversation and statements and demonstrations of which I am aware do not reflect my own views. I should have reached out to you earlier, but being away from campus I hadn’t realized that the anti-Zionist rhetoric had been so prevalent and so incendiary. When I saw the “call for action” statement, I was shocked. But I shouldn’t have been. I should not so easily forget about the power and strength of anti-Semitism in our country and in the academic community. Your response was powerful and well-articulated, especially the exposure of the double standards to which Israel is held again and again. It has helped me to articulate the truth of the situation amidst all the obfuscating rhetoric as I consider how to communicate about these events to others. I am writing because I want you to know that I care about you and support you. I don’t pretend to know how you are feeling, but I am with you. You have students who do not support the rhetoric that is being blasted across the quad and on the internet. You are not alone. I was affected by your call to stand up and speak my views. I do not yet know where my voice might make an impact. But I felt that I should start by communicating with you. Sincerely, D —— I have received many words of support. This is the single strongest one. I hope many more feel similarly and voice it. #HamasisISIS #freepalestinefromhamas #StandWithIsrael #StandWithUs #zionismisnotracism #zionismisnotapartheid #zionismisnotcolonialism
