Reseña de David Finkelstein acerca del cortometraje Carta a Boris.
Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds (fragrances), fixatives and solvents, usually in liquid form, used to give the human body, animals, food, objects, and living-spaces an agreeable scent. The Egyptians developed aromatic oils and essences 5000 years ago. Great perfume lovers, They used almond and rose oil, frankincense and myrrh, cedar, mimosa and lily, nutmeg, sweet balsam, cassia, benzoin and labdanum, galbanum and opopanax in such diverse preparations as aphrodisiacs, medicines, cosmetics and incense. In fact, the art of perfumery in Ancient Egypt was so sophisticated that when archaeologists opened Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922 they discovered an ointment that was still fragrant! The study of fragrance, developed in the Nile Valley, was to inspire other ancient cultures. In Greece, athletes anointed their bodies with aromatic oils, and at banquets Romans refreshed themselves between courses with flower-scented water. It was the Persians who developed the use of exotic ingredients and the technique of extracting oils from flowers through distillation. This expertise was brought to Western Europe at the time of the Crusades.

Dutch Connections: Essays on International Relationships in Architectural History (Holland: TU Delft) pp 207-216., 2020
In January 2020, I received a request from Sjoerd van Faassen for a 'contribution' [love that word!] to a Festschrift publication to be presented to Professor Herman van Bergeijk on the occasion of his retirement from Delft University of Technology in June 2020. The topic, Sjoerd said, was "Dutch Architecture Between the Wars." I knew little about "Dutch Architecture Between the Wars.” But I did know some things about Frank Lloyd Wright that might be relevant. Wright had a relationship with Holland between the wars. Libraries were closed for the pandemic but at my home in Iowa I had on my book shelf a poor facsimile of the Wendingen Edition, a monograph on Frank Lloyd Wright published and distributed in Holland in 1925 at a time when Wright was less than popular in the USA, indeed when he was persistently being hounded by the American popular press. Hounded? Had the American popular press then been what the American popular press is now, the hounding would have eliminated Wright. There would have been no Taliesin, no Midway Gardens, no Imperial Hotel, no Hollyhock house and no La Miniatura: all major works by Wright featured prominently in the Wendingen Edition. By 1911, Wright would have been a casualty of what we today call, charmingly, the "cancel culture". No Fallingwater. No Usonian houses. No Taliesin West. No Johnson Wax buildings. No Price Tower. No Guggenheim Museum. No Wright buildings would have been built after 1911. As good fortune would have it, however, the Dutch appreciated Wright and his astounding talents and so, in 1925, there appeared the Wendingen Edition, a highly edited monograph on Wright's first-quarter-of-the-20C architecture. Paging through the Wendingen Edition on the day in 1925 that it arrived at his home in Wisconsin, Wright was delighted. "The enlightened minority does seem at this time to be strongest in Holland,” he remarked. I guess that was so. Certainly, it was reason enough for me to focus my efforts and write this contribution to Herman's ending-it-all activities: a re-review of between-the-wars propaganda, Wendingen Edition: The Work of Frank Lloyd Wright. This paper addresses a question concerning Wright’s Teens and Twenties breach of his now renowned Prairie School aesthetic. Ornamental blocks, often seemingly introverted, have taken the place of long, low, stretched horizontals that open out. Why?
