Extension of the Netherlands Funds-in-Trust 2013- 2016

After three successful programme cycles of 4 years each, during the period from 2001 to 2012, the Dutch Government decided to extend the Netherlands Funds-in-Trust for another 4-year cycle during the period 2013-2016, for a total amount of 1.5 million Euros.

The implementation report “From Astronomy to Zanzibar – 10 Years of Dutch Support to World Heritage”, published by the World Heritage Centre in May 2012 during the 40th anniversary celebrations of the World Heritage Convention, gives an overview of support given to thematic programmes, cross-cutting initiatives and individual projects under the Netherlands Funds-in-Trust in the first ten years of its operation. For the 2013-2016 cycle, it was agreed to maintain the programme design and implementation that was used in previous cycles. In addition, support would be considered for a property on the List of World Heritage in Danger, when feasible.

The selection of projects and programmes for 2013 is related to the Strategic Objectives of the World Heritage Committee (5 C’s) and the sustainability of support given in terms of project follow-up or spin-off. The selected projects and programmes are:

Cultural Heritage Projects

  • Participatory Mapping of Historic Urban Landscapes – Creating the basis for Urban Regeneration of Ng’ambo, ‘Stone Town of Zanzibar’ World Heritage Site 
  • The Protection and Promotion of Rock Art in the Lautém District of Timor-Leste: Using Potential World Heritage Sites to Enhance the Livelihoods of Local Communities and Strengthen their Cultural Identity 
  • Support to Timbuktu under the Emergency Fund for Mali

Natural Heritage Projects

  • Development of an Outlook Report for Marine World Heritage 
  • Africa Nature: Improving the Conservation of the Natural World Heritage Sites in Africa through Targeted Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing: Component on engaging Local Communities in the Conservation of Natural World Heritage Sites

Cross-Cutting Initiatives

  • Asia-Pacific World Heritage Project on Marine Biodiversity & Climate Change Awareness among Youth 
  • Technical Assistance to Myanmar for Tentative List Revision and Updating 
  • Developing a Common Tourism Strategy for the Silk Roads Heritage Corridor in Central Asia and China
