This paper argues that the Old Syriac Gospel translation of Luke 1 and the Peshitta translation a... more This paper argues that the Old Syriac Gospel translation of Luke 1 and the Peshitta translation are generally similar lexically and in terms of verbal system. The contention that the Old Syriac is a much freer translation and that the Peshitta is a more literal revision needs to be clarified for Luke 1. The data indicates that the verbal systems of the two versions are quite similar in the indicative system. Nevertheless, the versions do exhibit idiosyncrasies unique to themselves. In terms
of the translators’ methods regarding poetry and prose, they both tend to translate the Greek text formally, following the word order of the Greek. Finally, the Syriac versions tend to rely on the Greek Vorlage of the New Testament rather than the Old Testament basis as the model for their translation of Old Testament material.
