People power and no I am not styling these photos

After quite a bit of faffing about in the land of bookface, asking for opinions, I was able to move forward with the bear guy that sprang up just before Christmas.    heads

You know, I think the thing about toys is trying to make something that looks like the real shape of animal , but also looks appealing… a kind of compromise between a really truly representation of an animal and our idea of the animal.

(and of course the limitations of the person doing the actual making) I also think I think way too much.

     newbrothers

So the Polar Brothers are born and I do really like them. Kind of real, and kind of cute and the best thing? that crazy Minky fabric makes them all touchable and rub-on-your-cheek lovely.

Please do ignore the gargantuanly headed deer who appears to have collapsed under the bears….

He just can’t stand on his own two feet.

Heads and shoulder, knees and toes

Today I made heads…lots of heads. These guys are the ones with potential. I tried some four piece heads (I’m not usually a fan of the seam up the middle of the face, but I am leaning that way at the moment.)

head2

yes, he is ugly there is no denying it, and his head is a little baseball shaped for what I want , but the ear is cute. I seem to be adding ears to everything these days. He is the very very starting point to someone I have wanted to make for ages and ages. He will be left to percolate for a bit longer.

head3

The guy I thought was a knight, is in fact a Viking . (Of course).  He seems to have reverse mumps on one side doesn’t he? Also his mouth is not quite happy enough is it? It is too wide. There is something just generally not right about the face but that’s Ok as it was just the head I was working on. I know the weird side of the head is just my crappy rushed sewing so I might proceed and give this guy some limbs and play with some clothes…a little shield maybe?

head1

And this little madam just popped up unbidden from a four piece practice. I’m going to nut this head out a bit more – especially that stuffed hair idea. She may of course turn out very very different in the end, but for the first time in a long time she popped in to my brain with her whole story.

May I introduce Elsie Cabbage.

(and she might just look like an unfinished head on a stick, but let me tell you – she means business!)

Cranium bouquet

In amongst the head bouquet, there is a new friend

We haven't been formally introduced yet

But I think I am going to like him.

I'm not the pheasant plucker

I am not the pheasant plucker

I'm the pheasant plucker's son

I only pluck the pheasants when the pheasant plucker's gone......

'cept that they are ducks, and not plucked, and I'm a girl.....

but it was either that or a shot of me having an existential softie- making breakdown....

and the choir of angels cleared their throats

Still hamstered guys, running running , getting nowhere - or that's how it seems.
I am crafting like a little beaver (do beavers craft?) to get my projects finished for the July retreat.
It is filling up quickly ! and Melly has posted a sneak peek of one of her projects over on her blog!

In blog news I made some new blog pages, (see up there under the header) Belinda showed me how and even though mine are pretty dull, I am mighty excited to add the Quilt Barn to my list of stockist - I mean Idaho may as well be on the moon, such is my chance of ever setting foot there, but it tickles me pink nonetheless.

In Flickr news - I have made a new group where you can put photos of stuff you have made using my patterns or freebies, tutorials or scribd download patterns. I'll try and figure out one of those little picture widgets for the side bar at some time. I really love seeing other peoples versions and adaptations of ideas.

and the choir of angles lined up (as they do) at the finish of a new project.....and they cleared their throats, and shuffled a bit and looked at their shoes. Their songbooks rustled and they picked imaginary lint from their gowns.
I wanted to love this project - I wanted you guys to love this project, I wanted voices lifted in song !
* sigh*
They couldn't even hum a few bars...

The week that wasn't

This week I have been sick, sick in ways I never knew I could be. It has been a looooong week but strangely also a short one. I have slept that crazy fevered-dream sleep all week on and off through the days and nights and now I have surfaced (albeit briefly ) to find the whole week is gone, consigned to history and I missed it ! Ooops.

This is cat-bot, made a few weeks ago and somehow only just getting his turn in the blog-light.

He has a small internal wire skeleton to keep him upright,so he's really not a toy. I made him because I seem to be slightly obsessed with robots and with putting hard elements and fabric together at the moment.

He has a little workable knitting needle axle.

and he is adored !

being presenty..........

Hello !
My name is Dungaree.
I am brand new and just made and all a bit excited.

I am special because I am a present and if I am a really good present then the person who I am ....um........being presenty for ......might take me home to live with them.

I have a balloon 'cause balloons are the funnest things ever- especially on birthdays.

and I have a tag what says important stuff on it like my name .
Jodie said to just write my name and happy birthday.....

but I didn't......cause I really want the present person to like me

and right now , I am sitting on the present persons desk at her really truly job and she is at not here right now.......and I am waiting a bit.............and I am smiling my best ever present smile and holding my balloon .........and being as presenty as I can be !

Happy birthday Annie!

A sickie ?

I may have woken up slightly disgruntled today. Last day of holidays and I could have sworn I have only had one week , not the two that were promised.

But when I look at the projects, I have to concede that yes, I have had two weeks off work , and yes got quite a lot done, and yes I am very lucky to work in the Education department and have quite a lot of holidays..........

BUT !!!

Today , on the very last day of holidays - I got an idea for a new softie and I have been sewing ALL day - It is kind of completely different to any softies I've done before....and it is still not quite finished and the dinner is on and I need to get a teeny bit organised for work, and maybe think about kids stuff and quickly pop to the supermarket and finish off a few spare petals for the purple flower and send a few emails and pack a parcel or two

I guess it would be pretty bad form to chuck a "softie-sickie" on the first day back wouldn't it???
