If democracy implies an epistemology, attempting to live a democratic way of life implies a theory about the nature of knowledge among other theoretical aspects (e.g. political and ethical). At the time of ‘fluid modernity’, the post-truth politics of renouncing truth damages the foundations of democracy, for how could we proceed with a democratic way of life without truth as a common denominator for deliberation? While a defining feature of the post-truth era is its intrinsic relativism, Gellner (2013) warns this could lead to ‘cognitive nihilism’. This article offers a critical reflection of the changes experienced in teacher education across ... more This article offers a critical reflection of the changes experienced in teacher education across Canada in light of the neoliberal impact on educational spaces. It also seeks to disrupt the neoliberal narrative and problematize a rationality that has permeated teacher education programs. The article maintains that the neoliberal agenda is incompatible with critical educational practices. As a mode of critical resistance to educational instrumentalism, the paper offers recommendations as part of its critique on the deleterious impact of neoliberalism. Cet article offre une réflexion critique des changements découlant de l'impact néolibéral sur les milieux éducatifs qui touchent la formation des enseignants partout au Canada. L'article veut également perturber la théorie néolibérale et problématiser une rationalité qui s'est infiltrée dans les programmes de formation des enseignants. L'article affirme que le programme néolibéral est incompatible avec des pratiques éducatives cruciales. Comme élément de sa critique de l'impact néfaste du néolibéralisme, l'article propose des recommandations en guise de moyens de résistance critique à l'instrumentalisme en éducation.

Some scholars have suggested that the situation follows from a mismatch between education as an assumed field of study and applied empirical research methods. This article’s analysis of evidence-based recommendations in mathematics education is based on a critique that evidence-based research recommendations for classroom practice simply advance analytic claims that are conceptually connected to the particular practice under investigation.
In a Deleuzian-inspired deconstruction of identity, home, and subjectivity, the authors explore t... more In a Deleuzian-inspired deconstruction of identity, home, and subjectivity, the authors explore the cultivation of the self in Laila Lalami's Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits. Beneath the struggle for subjectivity and identity, there exists a discourse of survival that creates an image of the immigrant as the wandering and uncertain citizen. In this context, traces of the Deleuzian nomad are identified and explored in Lalami's characters. These individuals embody qualities attributed to nomads by continuously disrupting different manifestations of fixity in their lives through various forms of resistance. For the characters in Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits, possibilities for connection are visible in their struggle to disrupt the perception of a fixed identity. The tapestry of identities created reveals a nomadic potential that interrupts linear notions of being. The consequent creative force enables identities to be negotiated in an in-between space that is decentred and thrives in the realm of unpredictability.

This article explores how the lack of state funding reeled corporates into educational spaces as sponsors raised moral and ethical legitimacy concerns in research.
French-Moroccan author Tahar ben Jelloun is known mostly as a prolific novelist who has written o... more French-Moroccan author Tahar ben Jelloun is known mostly as a prolific novelist who has written on themes of migration, sexuality, political abuse and corruption, and the tensions in the realm of hope and hopelessness. In this chapter, however, our aim is to show that ben Jelloun’s writing comes to life in a postcolonial space and is informed by existential philosophy, which has important insights and implications for education. By focusing on two characters from the novels A Palace in the Old Village and Leaving Tangiers, we will identify critical qualities of ben Jelloun’s postcolonial writing and existentialist philosophy – a philosophy that challenges the Anglo-saxon tradition of liberalism, rationality, and universality. In contrast, ben Jelloun develops a philosophy based on notions of exile, migration, hospitality, and placesslessness of the migrant’s dwelling. In the final section of the chapter we will explicitly identify concrete insights and implications for education from ben Jelloun’s philosophy.
