ABSTRACT In this tribute to the late Keith Aoki, Professor of Law at U.C. Davis, I point out that... more ABSTRACT In this tribute to the late Keith Aoki, Professor of Law at U.C. Davis, I point out that at the heart of much of Keith Aoki’s humanity and scholarship is a call for us to be on guard against institutional, public, and private strategies operating to disadvantage people of color and other subordinated groups. Much of his life and body of work inspires us to stand up to racism and subordination of those who are disadvantaged. In that context, I discuss recent attacks on Muslim, Arab and South Asian communities, and underscore our responsibility to speak the truth about these injustices, as Keith would have us do. In the process, I use a few cartoons as an homage to Keith, who often used his drawings to make salient points. Just as racial profiling by government action has seemingly sanctioned vigilante racism or, worse still, perpetration of hate crimes, Keith’s leadership and creative advocacy has deputized all of us to stand up to profiling, bigotry, racial hatred, and the wrong-headed souls who would challenge a broad and inclusive vision of America.

Workplace raids by gun-wielding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents that resulted in... more Workplace raids by gun-wielding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents that resulted in the mass arrests of dozens and sometimes hundreds of employees have ceased under the Obama administration. But "silent raids," or audits of companies' records by federal agents, that replaced them have resulted in the firing of thousands of undocumented workers. The administration defends these "softer, gentler" operations, yet the result is the same: workers who are here to support their families are out of work. In this essay, David Bacon and Bill Ong Hing argue that ICE raids-be they of the Bush or the Obama kind-should cease. The basis for these operations-employer sanctions-should be repealed, and true reform that recognizes the rights of all workers should be enacted.

In the past three decades, images of undocumented immigrants pouring across the southern border h... more In the past three decades, images of undocumented immigrants pouring across the southern border have driven the immigration debate and policies have been implemented in response to those images. The Oklahoma City bombings and the tragic events of September 11, both of questionable relevance to immigration policy have provided further impetus to implement strategies that are anti-immigration in design and effect. This book discusses the major immigration policy areas - undocumented workers, the immigration selection system, deportation of aggravated felons, national security and immigration policy, and the integration of new Americans - and the author suggests his own proposals on how to address the policy challenges from a perspective that encourages us to consider the moral consequences of our decisions. The author also reviews some of the policies that have been put forth and ignored and suggests new policies that would be good for the country economically and socially.
