A more recent focus of interest is comics, in particular, comic books related to food, graphic memoirs and non-fiction comics. Un agradecimiento especial to the Dominican participants in the study and to their families; Anelsa Peña, Rosa Mota, Luis Leonor, Nancy Marte, Maria Santos, Josefina Blyden, and Rafael de los Santos, that shared their foods, time and energy with such generosity and enthusiasm. I am grateful for their trust, openness, and creative collaboration in producing the primary sources for this project, in the mist of their daily struggles for survival. I am grateful to my committee Brian Stross, Samuel M. Wilson, Jafari S. Allen, Pauline T. Strong, Joel F. Sherzer, and William Doolittle for agreeing to work with me, for their patience, inspiration, and support. A special agradecimiento to my adviser Brian Stross for his friendship and kindness, for his trust in my ability to undertake and finish this project even in times of great confusion, for his challenging questions and insights about approaches to food, language, and identity, and for logistics support with fieldwork and exhibition. Thanks to Samuel Wilson for being one of the few Caribbeanist in the department, and for helping me early on to narrow down my scope from an ethnobotany of the entire Caribbean region to a manageable project on the ways food help Dominican migrants create senses of home in a new society. Thanks to Polly Strong for teaching the right courses, on the right subjects, at the right time, helping me design with care my ethnographic praxis; her intellectual clarify inspired me to find specific theoretical and methodological visualizations for this project, especially in relation to feminist theory, gender and representation. Thanks to Jafari Allen for his humanity and frank interactions, for bringing to his courses and talks refreshing approaches and playful discussions about Caribbean selfmaking practices through an Afro-diasporic perspective, and for his inspiring writings. Thanks to Joel Sherzer for helping me define a niche for my work between cultural and linguistic anthropology through his inclusive explorations of discourse, verbal art, and expressive practices. I am grateful to William Doolittle, and to his colleges (Maria Elisa Christi and David Cotter) in the Geography department for teaching three wonderful vi courses, on food production, cuisine and maps, that helped me understand how environments and human relations continuously and mutually reshape cultural landscapes. Doolittle's insights and interest in Hispaniola foods and environments helped me keep in focus the geopolitical and economic grounds through which cultural processes happen. I am grateful to people and resources that helped me survive fieldwork research in NYC. First, a special thanks to Laura Lein for her patience and kind guidance with the IRB process. In NYC, thanks to Rosa and her husband Manuel for sharing their food, household and work, and for giving me shelter when I most needed it.
