In July 2013, for the first time in the Greek civil sector, a legal measure suspending labour, wa... more In July 2013, for the first time in the Greek civil sector, a legal measure suspending labour, was applied overnight on Greek Secondary Education teachers. More than 2,200 secondary school teachers were affected. This so-called “reform effort” impacted on 23,000 students, through abolishing 52 Technical Education specialties. The majority (80%) of affected secondary school teachers were placed on suspension, while 20% underwent obligatorily transfers to administrative positions through the application of a government dictated “social criteria”. This research that took place from 2013 till 2017, investigated the burnout experienced both by teachers who were suspended and by those who were compulsorily transferred to administration duties. The Maslach Burnout Inventory measurements recorded the highest percentages on this scale, in its history of application to Greek teachers. This article investigates the governmentality in the pedagogical systems through the teachers'... more This article investigates the governmentality in the pedagogical systems through the teachers' mission and the corresponding teachers' education in Greece from the construction of the nation/state and for about a century, according to the socio-economical conditions that emerged. It does so in order to analyse the relation of society, the educational system and teachers' education. To this end, it decodes, through discourse analysis among other means, the state's official texts, the pedagogy applied, the teachers' tasks and position in teaching, and the impact of the above on teachers' education. It discerns three reform periods of teachers' education in Greece from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, and explores how teachers were prepared in the Didaskalio (teachers' education institution) in each period. It concludes that power relations determine the construction of the teacher's soul in order to construct the child's soul.

This research is framed by the principles of liberating education, according to which education i... more This research is framed by the principles of liberating education, according to which education is political and members of the community have the opportunity to change themselves through critical consciousness. In this context, we explore childhood consumerism in debt-ridden Greece based on nationwide quantitative research conducted through questionnaires. The sample was 320 parents of kindergarten students attending private and public kindergartens of Greece, stratified by income. According to the results, advertisements affect not only children but also the parents and the family as a whole. The results demonstrate the need and desire of parents that preschoolers develop resistance to marketing techniques. We propose teaching resistance to children and their families by including advertising literacy, a branch of media education, in pre-school education curricula. It examines how imperialism has affected education in the heart of the empire through the organized business sector, Edubusiness, privatization and militarization. This model of Neoliberal education has been exported and imposed on a global scale leading to a degradation of critical thinking and human values. The New Dark Ages are in the mirror of the markets. This article suggests that the hope of Critical Pedagogy is resistance to the dehumanization in progress. It concludes that Critical educators are fighting a war for the future of humanity.
Neoliberalism has forged new modes of subjectivity and citizenship through a social mandate to pr... more Neoliberalism has forged new modes of subjectivity and citizenship through a social mandate to provide for one's survival solely through individual "choice." As a consequence, we have oppression, manipulation, exploitation and human misery. In this paper I support that Critical Pedagogy can contribute to the creation of a human agent who is autonomous, more humane, author of his/her decisions, dignified, with social solidarity, responsibility, and a sense of freedom that negates every dehumanizing practice through the cultivation of a democratic ethos. In essence, the democratic ethos is the starting point of a reflective praxis. This democratic ethos evolves into conscientization, which in turn becomes "responsibilization", culminating in solidarity, love, dignity, hope and mutual support through praxis, inevitably reinforcing the same democratic ethos. This means that critical pedagogy promotes a teaching culture that will foster the development of a young generation, which will inevitably negate the capitalist system.
