A prototype of a fully electronic on-load semiconductor tap changer for power transformer has bee... more A prototype of a fully electronic on-load semiconductor tap changer for power transformer has been designed and built. With the emergence of high power semiconductor devices, problems associated with the mechanical on-load tap changer have been properly rectified. In this work, the prototype was constructed with triacs as the switching devices and microcontroller as the triggering circuit. The results obtained from this work show that the prototype has a faster time response of approximately 0.44s to react to any load changes. It also produces no arching problems as it has no mechanical contacts and requires no maintenance, and can be considered as one of the fast solutions of the voltage sag or voltage swell. The system has been tested for reliability and proven to be reliable in maintaining the output voltage of the system.

A microcontroller M68HCI IE-9 has been used to Implement such techniques. The microcontroller senses the speed's feedback signal and consequently provides the pulse width variation signal that sets the gate voltage of the chopper, which in turn provldes the required voltage for the desired speed. A Buck type chopper has been used to control the input voltage of a fully controlled single phase Isolated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) bridge inverter. PWM techiiique has been employed in this inverter to supply the motor w€th ac voltage. Fossil fuels had been used for centuries and the usage of those fuels had made their supplies lim... more Fossil fuels had been used for centuries and the usage of those fuels had made their supplies limited. Solar energy is one of thz most promising solutions, which offer an actual clean, environmental friendly, renewable and altemative energy option. The main objective of tlns project is to store the energy from the sun in another form o f energy. Hydrogen storage is chosen for its potential to make a clean energy option and low cost in construction. The development for hydrogen-fuel economy which had rapid increase in industrial application had also influent the decision of this project. In this work, the solar energy applications in Malaysia have been investigated and converted to an electric energy by using the photovoltaic cells. Electrolysis, which is the simplest process to generate hydrogen, is powered by the dc voltage from the photovoltaic cell instead of use the battery as power supply.

Petroleum and mineral based fluids have, for almost one century, been used for cooling and insula... more Petroleum and mineral based fluids have, for almost one century, been used for cooling and insulation purposes. Their popularity' stems out of their availability and cheapness. However, recent evidence has shown deficiencies with these fluids. They have low properties especially flash and fire points and most importantly low dielectric break down voltage. The most serious of these shortcomings is the inability to meet up with health and environmental laws. This is because they are not organic and hence not biodegradable; their spillage takes very long time to decompose. These developments have led to seeking alternatives in vegetable based fluids. The fluids tried and confirmed to be used as dielectric fluids include castor oil, coconut oil, soya bean oil, rapeseed oil etc. This work has measured the properties of palm oil against the IEEE C637 and ASTM D section for possible use as a dielectric fluid. The result shows that treated palm oil has break down voltage of 75 kV/mm, flash point >220), fire point (>220) and moisture content (0.08%). Hence this has shown the potential of palm oil as a dielectric fluid. However future work should focus on further investigation before field application. Malaysia as a country stands a lot of gains in this type of research, since it is a world is leader in palm oil production.
