Marie-Hélène Paré
Marie-Hélène Paré teaches qualitative research methods at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and is a freelance methodologist in qualitative data analysis. She was educated in Quebec, Beirut, and Oxford, where she studied social work. A clinician by training, she worked as a mental health officer in humanitarian missions with MSF, MDM, and UNWRA, as well as in psychosocial assistance programs for survivors of war trauma in East Africa and the Middle East. Her expertise in the field led her to examine, in her doctoral thesis, the harm that INGOs can do in the name of doing good when imposing Western paradigms in culturally and politically different contexts.
For over twenty years, Marie-Hélène has conducted qualitative research and used NVivo for various qualitative methodologies, including realist synthesis, meta-narrative synthesis, grounded theory, cross-case analysis, qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis. She is a sought-after methodologist, having taught courses and seminars in qualitative data analysis at more than sixty universities and research centres worldwide, including universities in Iran and Qatar. Since 2009, she has taught introductory and advanced qualitative data analysis courses at the ECPR Methods School in Europe, both of which have won the Cora Maas Award for best courses. She has also taught similar courses at the IPSA-NUS Summer School in Singapore since 2017. Marie-Hélène is an NVivo Certified Platinum Trainer and NVivo Core Trainer Team member, teaching the NVivo online courses. Her methodological interests span from advances in qualitative data analysis, qualitative evidence synthesis, postcolonial epistemology and participatory methodologies.
When she is not teaching, writing, or debating about QDA, Marie-Hélène is an enthusiastic barefoot runner and open-water swimmer who thrives on OMAD and the ketogenic diet. She is passionate about the healing power of intermittent fasting, breath hold and ice baths to improve physical and mental health.
