After pursuing the themes of electoral reform and universal suffrage in a broader sense, the article outlines the card's history from its inception in 1929 to its role in the polemics over electoral corruption by the Conservative Party, which ranged over the period before the Violencia. While national‐level politics are emphasised, the impact of the card at the municipal level also is suggested, as the critical link between the national and the local.

It highlights the protocols that indexers may use when they come across Spanish names, phrases, places and cultural terms and concepts that appear in English-language publications whose meanings are not easily translated into English. Spanish personal names can be compound first names or family names, usually composed of the father's family name, known as patronymics or the mother's family name known as matronymics. With regards to organizational names, a cross reference between the Spanish and English entries would be necessary. Indexers are advised to avoid the practice of translating English indexes for Spanish editions.
