The study which deals with dictionary-making is widely regarded as lexicography. The product of tis painstaking task is a dictionary. This kind of reference book encompasses a wealth of information both linguistic (spelling, pronunciation, meaning, word partners, idioms, phrasal verbs, etc.) and encyclopedic (facts and figures). Thus, before elaborating upon the information or content found in a dictionary, we are going to pave the way for this oldest subfield of linguistics: lexicography.

In fact, teachers and learners can make use of this list in their writing classes, but, as said throughout the paper, teachers should, for all intents and purposes, explain some subtle nuances or differences between those connectors, which may pose some problems in terms of usage; that is, appropriateness or formality. They can mean the same in general way, but they entail some key differences. Such differences can tell us why one word or expression sounds natural or appropriate in a specific context and why another word or expression does not sound right in other situations.

A vast majority of 2nd year students at ISPH (Instituto Superior Politécnico da Huíla), more often than not, tend to underuse, overuse, and misuse discourse connectors in their pieces of writing. As a consequence, there tend to have no cohesion or coherence in their pieces of writing. To this end, 30 Information Technology and Computer Science Engineering EFL students with the age range above 15 up to 30 were selected at ISPH. Strictly speaking, 26 of them were males and 3 were females. Then two writing tests (a pre-test and a post-test) were employed in the present study: A pre-test to assess their prior knowledge and use of discourse connectors, and a post-test to measure students‘ writing proficiency after the explicit instruction of discourse connectors. Thus, these tests entailed two groups (the control and
experiential groups): the control group received no explicit instruction on
discourse connectors, whereas students in the experimental group received an explicit treatment on discourse connectors. Thus, results indicated that the students in the control group encountered several difficulties in using them. In contrast, the students in the experimental group (who received explicit instruction on discourse connectors) proved that they had a quite good command of them in their writing. Thus, the study concluded that explicit instruction of discourse connectors should be encouraged as a condition or means to develop students‘ writing proficiency and to avoid lack of cohesion or coherence in their pieces of writing.

We could see that a great number of learners tend to make mistakes in the use of verbs in a sentence. Some learners fail to know whether a verb is transitive or intransitive (or rather what comes after a verb). Others tend to ignore their meanings (or rather, they fail to know whether a verb denotes an action/process or denotes states). A few of them commit mistakes in terms of inflected forms. As a consequence, we can see that a great number of learners tend to have problems when it comes to speaking and writing English language. In this regard, we propose extensive reading to expand vocabulary and language exposure.

A saying, more often than not, has a different meaning from the literal meanings of the words it contains (figurative, metaphorical or symbolic meaning). It often gives a piece of advice. It is generally synonymous with a proverb. There are some sayings that are mostly used in British English (BrE) and others mostly used in American English (AmE). A large number of them are used both in British and American settings. As the saying goes, … 1. A bad workman blames his tools. (BrE) It is used when someone has blamed a mistake or failure on the things that they use for their work. 2. A bird in the hand (is worth two in the bush). (= One bird in the hands is worth two in the bush.) It is used when you recognise that you should not risk losing something you already have by trying to get something you think might be better. 3. A change is as good as a rest. (BrE) You can get much good from changing the work you do as from having a rest. 4. A drowning man will clutch at a straw. Said about someone who is in a very difficult situation, and who will take any available opportunity to improve it. 5. A friend in need (is a friend indeed). This means that a friend who helps you when you really need help is a true friend. 6. A good time was had by all. Said to mean that everyone enjoyed themselves. 7.

The Prevalence of Syphilis in Angola: Symptoms, Signs, and Treatment, 2023

Clearly, it is a very important health issue, especially for Angolan people (e.g., the young ones, university students, families, etc.), because we assume that few people can have a superficial knowledge about this issue. In this regard, this work is structured in three main sections. The first section is going to focus on what syphilis exactly is. The second section is going to center around the prevalence of syphilis in Angola, and its causes, that is the main issue of this article. Apart from these sections, we are going to revolve around its clinical manifestations: symptoms and signs. The last section is going to tell us about the treatment of syphilis, or what we can do when discussing the treatment plan with patient and the family. After considering all these issues, we are going to come up with some key points in the conclusion of this article.
As we may know, syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum, a highly pathogenic bacterium. It is viewed as an infectious disease transmitted through sex or vertically during pregnancy. It can be acquired or congenital. For instance, in acquired syphilis, the transmission occurs predominantly through sexual contact, mainly affecting the genital, oral, and anal areas. In congenital syphilis, the transmission takes place by meas of the placenta or blood in contact with fluids that contain the bacteria at any gestational or clinical stage of maternal disease (Pasqualotto & Schwarzbold, 2006; WHO, 2017).
As a matter of fact, syphilis is one of the major challenges to public health in Angola due to the significant increase in diagnosed cases. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that, in 2010, there were eleven million new cases of syphilis per year worldwide. Six years later, WHO (2016) estimated that “there are anestimated 18 million prevalent cases of syphilis.” Despite the fact that this infection is generally asymptomatic. As is well known, syphilis is a common viral sexually transmitted disease (STD). Consequently, people who have so many sexual partners are prone to have this infection or disease.
The Incidence of Genital Warts and Other HPV related Diseases in Angola Symptoms Signs and Treatment, 2023

We know that it is a very important health issue, especially for Angolan people (e.g., the young ones, university students, and families) because we can notice that very few people have a nodding acquaintance with this issue. In this regard, this work is structured in three main sections. The first section is going to focus on genital warts and other HPV-related venereal diseases (VD, any disease caught by having sexual intercourse with an infected person). The second section is going to center around the incidence of genital warts and other HPV-related diseases in Angola, that is the main issue of this article. Apart from these sections, we are going to revolve around its clinical manifestations: symptoms and signs of genital warts. The third and last section is going to tell us about the treatment of genital warts and other HPV-related venereal diseases, and what we can do when discussing the treatment plan with patient and the family. After considering all these issues, we are going to come up with some key points in the conclusion of this article.
To put it simply, genital warts are lesions caused by a type of Human papillomavirus (HPV) that infects the genital and anal skin. In Angola, genital infection with humanpapilloma virus (HPV) is very common. Despite the fact that this infection is generally asymptomatic, it is widely recognized as genital warts when symptoms are present in a human being. As is well known, genital warts are manifestations of a common viral sexually transmitted disease (STD). Consequently, people who have so many sexual partners are prone to have this infection or disease. As a matter of fact, humanpapilloma virus (HPV) plays an essential role in cervical cancer development. For exemple, according to Rocha et al. (2021, p. 2), “cervical cancer accounts for 37% of cancers among women in Angola. A total of 2,949 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed in 2018. It is considered the first leading cause of female cancer-related deaths in Angola.” Thus, in the following pages we are going to concentrate on what genital warts are and how prevent it or treat it.
The Dying English Lexicon vs. The Living English Lexicon , 2023
The purpose of this article is to distinguish English dying lexicon from English living lexicon. ... more The purpose of this article is to distinguish English dying lexicon from English living lexicon. The former is concerned with the vocabulary (i.e., words and expressions) that is on the verge of becoming old-fashioned, or the one which is close to extinction (i.e., vocabulary that is in danger of dying out), but which is still used. The latter is related to the outdated vocabulary, that is, words and expressions made extinct in modern use. Besides, we are going to strike the balance between them – to look at the both sides of the same coin – old-fashioned and new English language vocabulary. The balance of evidence suggests that English lexicon regenerates itself every single day. What is more, there is convencing evidence of a link between the growth of English vocabulary and this new era of technology.
Additionally, we are going to discuss the nature and the importance of archaisms, quotations, and clichés found in everyday standard modern English language. While some words and expressions tend to ‘die out’, others are born and reborn naturally. This is a linguistic phenomenon (i.e., internal language change) that seems to be unstoppable and unavoidable, no matter how hard people can try. As a matter of course, “all living languages have changed and continue to change” (Richards & Schmidt, 2010, p. 315). Thus, there are two important linguistic areas – phonology and lexis (vocabulary of a language) – ‘where change is most noticeable and frequent’ (Crystal, 2008, p. 267).
Finally, there are lexical items viewed as ‘plague’ – clichés – that are condemned by some lexicographers and English speakers on the grounds that they have lost their originality and expressiveness, but a larger number of people tend to use clichés more and more because of their linguistic beauty and smoothness. Other lexemes – archaisms – have been omitted from daily conversations or from pieces of academic writing owing to their old use. Nevertheless, language can revitalize and revive all those words and expressions considered to be ‘dead’.

To put it simply, we are going to focus upon types of text and its cohesive devices: cohesion and coherence. In our experience as language teachers, we have noticed that a large number of university students tend to face so many problems with regard to academic or formal writing in Portuguese. Some fail to know what a text is and the rules of textuality. In this paper we have made an attempt to provide some technical tools to academically compose a formal piece of writing. We are also going to touch on characteristics, properties of a text, and factors affecting a text. Thematic progression is a textual entity that is also going to be taken into consideration. It is important to mention that every single type of text follows appropriate rules. In conclusion, we have seen that it is essential to establish cohesion and coherence in a text. With regard to cohesion we elaborated on grammatical and lexical cohesion. As far as coherence is concerned, we touched on logical sense of a sentence. In both cases, it is crucial to incorporate discourse connectors (or transitional signals) in pieces of writing, apart from having a good vocabulary and cognitive flexibility. If students strictly stick to all those features, rules, factors and properties, they will develop their formal writing proficiency.
