inclusive growth with emphasis on the effectiveness of institutional
environment in influencing public spending outcomes in Nigeria using
time series data spanning from 1985 to 2021. The effects of subcategories of public spending are equally examined using Autoregressive
Distributed Lag (ARDL) model and Error Correction Method (ECM).
From the empirical analysis, we found that public spending do have
significant negative effects on inclusive growth in Nigeria. Similarly,
government recurrent expenditure does not have significant effect on
inclusive growth, with weak institutions. We conclude that despite
increasing public spending, without quality institutions, the expected
development outcomes will not be achieved in Nigeria. The study
advocates for an effective public administration, with an incentive system
that will reduce fraud and monitor the utilization of public resources for
equitable distribution of development outcomes.
