Arabic has been traditionally described as a canonically diglossic language (Ferguson, 1959), wit... more Arabic has been traditionally described as a canonically diglossic language (Ferguson, 1959), with Standard Arabic (SA) as the high variety and spoken vernaculars as low varieties. Further research has proven that the actual linguistic landscape in Arabic speaking countries does not reflect this dichotomy, but rather a layered continuum where different varieties (and sometimes languages) interact, fulfilling different communicative functions and carrying multiple symbolic values. In this sea of varieties, the metalinguistic label «White Arabic» has gained prominence in the last decade, coinciding with the emergence of an increasingly interconnected Arab world. Although the notion of WA was treated peripherally in previous scientific studies (Al-Rojaie, 2020; Dufour, 2008; Germanos, 2009; O’Neill, 2017), none of these deal with the term as a main object. There seems to be no clear consensus regarding the definition of White Arabic – data hints at different understandings of the concept in Lebanon, Jordan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. Thus, this study aims at exploring the speakers’ understandings and perceptions of this notion by analyzing metalinguistic comments made by speakers in qualitative interviews, as well as in media (podcasts, newspapers, blogs, etc.) and social media platforms (facebook, youtube, twitter, etc.). The data is complemented by findings from qualitative questionnaires conducted among speakers from five of the abovementioned Arabic speaking countries.

The present study focuses on different topicalization strategies and on the linguistic realizatio... more The present study focuses on different topicalization strategies and on the linguistic realization of a variety of topics used in highly affective communicative contexts in Lebanese Arabic, i.e., contexts where speakers show highly emotional states. Through the analysis of topic occurrences found in this corpus, my study explores some discursive and pragmatic functions of topicalization and identifies and analyses "Participant Relevance Topics"-a specific type of free topics which appear with relative abundance in the data and fulfil important discursive and pragmatic functions.
Cognate Infinitives have been identified and described as productive linguistic features within A... more Cognate Infinitives have been identified and described as productive linguistic features within Arabic language and along the Semitic continuum. However, their full range of function remains largely unstudied in the spoken varieties of Arabic. This study proposes a new grammatical model for the analysis and description of Cognate Infinitives in Lebanese Arabic that accounts for this feature's semantic, informational, affective and social functions. It suggests that Cognate Infinitives function as focus markers and are efficient communicative tools for a variety of attention management actions as well as for 'face' management strategies. The findings of this study therefore replace the omnipresent notion of "adverbial emphasis" with a definition of "focus" that comprises both informational and affective factors.

Despite the relatively scarce literature on the topic and the lack of terminological consensus a... more Despite the relatively scarce literature on the topic and the lack of terminological consensus among scholars, Cognate Infinitives (CI) have been identified to share formal and functional characteristics across Semitic. The present study provides a description of the formal features of Cognate Infinitives in Lebanese Arabic (LA) based on the analysis of linguistic data gathered through a participant observation method. The novelty of this description lies in its comparative approach, which has been developed in the light of the Semitic evidence available, gathered through a review of the main literature available on the topic. The results of this comparative analysis reveal that the grammatical features of Cognate Infinitives in Lebanese Arabic seem to be in line with genera Semitic trends that do not, however, always find their parallel in prescriptive descriptions of Cognate Infinitives in Classical or Standard Arabic.

catalyzed by noteworthy socio-political developments within the same
community. In this light, the present study aims to explore recent
linguistic developments regarding speakers’ use of Arabic and their
perception of its status in Lebanon in the midst of a time of profound
social and political change: The October Revolution. The data analysis
of this study focuses on how the events of the October Revolution have
affected the use and status of Arabic in Lebanon and reshaped this
language’s place in the public sphere. This study adopts an
anthropological approach within the study of language attitudes that
combines more than nine years of direct observations of community
linguistic practices in Lebanon with other types of primary and
secondary data: a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews along
with social media data analysis.
The results of this study show that the October Revolution has
effectively contributed in the development of new sets of positive
attitudes towards Arabic among Lebanese speakers which, in turn, have
played an essential role in the construction of the collective social
identity of the national group of ‘thuwwār’ (revolutionaries) by
fulfilling both social explanatory and social-differentiation functions.

Este trabajo explora los factores motivacionales que influyen en el aprendizaje del árabe como l... more Este trabajo explora los factores motivacionales que influyen en el aprendizaje del árabe como lengua extranjera, centrándose en la evolución y los cambios que estos experimentan a lo largo del tiempo, las distintas formas en las que interac- túan entre sí, y en su relación con el éxito en el aprendizaje de la lengua. Nuestro estudio consiste en un análisis exhaustivo de la información cualitativa recogida en entrevistas con estudiantes universitarios en España. Los resultados de dicho análisis confirman la validez del Modelo de Proceso de la Motivación en la L2 de Dörnyei y Ottó, sugiriendo, no obstante, ciertas modificaciones y adiciones que podrían ser de gran utilidad para adaptar este modelo a otras segundas len- guas que, como el árabe, presentan una naturaleza diglósica o requieren un pro- ceso de aprendizaje especialmente costoso y prolongado.
This study explores the motivational factors acting when learning Arabic as a foreign language, focusing on their evolution and changes over time, the different ways in which these interact, and their correlation with language learning success. Through an extensive analysis of qualitative data collected during interviews of university undergraduate students in Spain, our research validates Dornyei and Ottó’s Process Model for L2 Motivation, suggesting, however, some significant adjustments and additions that would be of great use when adapting this model to other second languages which, like Arabic, present diglossic features and/or require a particularly long and arduous learning process.
Cet article traite la descente aux enfers dans les récits et les légendes populaires à travers un... more Cet article traite la descente aux enfers dans les récits et les légendes populaires à travers une étude comparative entre le Mi’raj de Mahomet dans la tradition musulmane et le mythe des jumeaux Hunahpu et Xbalanque dans la tradition Maya. Doté d’un cadre théorique qui s’inspire de la pensée de Vladimir Propp, Mircea Eliade et Carl Jung, cette étude se penche sur le contexte dans lequel ces deux récits se déroulent – l’enfer et sa géographie, ses lois, et ses habitants – et sur les protagonistes de ces voyages, héros ou prophètes. D’une part, l’objectif de cette analyse est de souligner le lien étroit qui existe entre la vie quotidienne, les récits populaires, et la religion, et d’une autre part, de restaurer ce fil doré qui unit ces deux histoires à travers l’espace et le temps, preuve irréfutable de leur source commune: l’essence même de la condition humaine.
