NNPC converter is a four-level converter topology for medium voltage applications with interesting properties such as operating over a wide range of voltages (2.4-7.2KV) without the need for connecting power semiconductor in series, high quality output voltage, less number of components compared to other classical four-level topologies. A discrete-time model of the converter is presented, and all the control objectives are formulated in terms of the switching states. During each sampling interval, the predicted variables are assessed by the cost function, and the best switching state which gives minimum value for the cost function is selected and applied to the converter gating terminals. The performance of the NNPC converter and predictive control scheme are verified through MATLAB/Simulink simulations and their feasibility is evaluated experimentally.

Based upon the circle criterion approach, a nonlinear observer is designed to estimate pertinent but unmeasurable state variables of the considered induction machine for sensorless control purpose. The observer gain matrices are computed as a solution of linear matrix inequalities (LMI) that ensure the stability conditions of the state observer error dynamics in the sense of Lyapunov concepts. Measured and estimated state variables can be exploited to perform a state feedback control of the machine system. The simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for nonlinear observer design.

Two main features of the proposed flatness based control are worth to be mentioned. Firstly, the simplicity of implementation of the flatness approach as a nonlinear feedback linearization control technique. Secondly, when the chosen flat outputs involve non available state variable measurements a nonlinear observer is used to estimate them. The main advantage of the used observer is its ability to exploite the properties of the system nonlinearties. The simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiness of the proposed approach for sensorless control of the considered induction motor.

In this paper, we propose to employ an optimal filtering strategy as a post processing method for a multiple description transform coding (MDTC) approach which utilizes discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Experimental results show that the proposed approach provides better results compared to existing approaches in the literature.

This is accomplished through the tuning of the duty cycle D to an optimum value DMPP , that controls a DC-DC converter applied between the GPV and the load Rload . This paper proposes a system that is applicable to any load and enables rapid and precise tracking under variable weather circumstances. The suggested scheme allows simple and direct computation of the control signal DMPP from the values of Rload and RMPP . Rload is computed using two voltage and current sensors, while RMPP is estimated using an artificial neural network (ANN) that employs the solar irradiance, temperature and the GPV internal current-voltage characteristics. Using MATLAB environment, the obtained simulation results reveal better and more effective tracking with nearly no os...

It is well known that induction motors are the most widely used motors in electrical appliances, industrial control and automation. However, it is also known that induction motor control is a complex task that is due to its nonlinear characteristics. Two main features of the proposed approach are worth to be mentioned. Firstly, a nonlinear control is carried out using a nonlinear feedback linearization technique involving non available state variable measurements of the induction motor system. Secondly, a nonlinear observer is designed to estimate these pertinent but unmeasurable state variables of the machine. The circle-criterion approach is performed to compute the observer gain matrices as a solution of LMI (linear matrix inequalities) that ensure the stability conditions, in the sense of Lyapunov, of the estimated state error dynamics of the designed observer. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Eleven years (2007–2017) wind data at m 10 , from Algerian stations Meteorological, has been analyzed to obtain wind energy potential assessment. The two-parameter Weibull distribution has been used to determine and analyzed the wind power density and wind energy potential. Several methods are used to estimate the Weibull parameters. In this paper, the standard deviation method is used, given its robustness and reliability. On the other hand, the vertical extrapolation of the velocity is used to evaluate the power density and energy density at heights of m 30 , and m 60 . The results of this study show that this site is not a suitable location for large scale wind turbines, but for the use of off-grid electrical applications.

Consequently, precise wind prediction is very important for efficient management of grid-connected wind farms. This article examines the use of wavelet analysis combined with neural networks to predict wind speed. The wavelet transform is employed to smooth the wind speed time series for better prediction using neural networks. Using the wind speed data of the region of Annaba situated in the east of Algeria, the obtained results show the db4 wavelet with 5-level decomposition outperforms all other wavelet families in terms of forecasting accuracy.

The advantage of the circle criterion approach for nonlinear observer design is that it directly handles the nonlinearities of the system with less restriction conditions in contrast of the other methods which attempt to eliminate them. However the H∞ observer guaranteed the stability taking into account disturbance and noise attenuation. Linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization approach is used to compute the gains matrices for the two observers. The simulation results show the superiority of H∞ observer in the sense that it can achieve convergence to the true state, despite the nonlinearity of model and the presence of disturbance.

The advantage of the Backstepping Strategy is the ability to manage a nonlinear system. The Lyapunov theory has been used to ensure the system stability. To improve the controller robustness proprieties the integral action is used, despite the system uncertainties and the existence of external disturbances. The unavailable rotor flux is recovered by estimation of the rotor flux of the machine based on the integration of the stator voltage expressions. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme under load disturbances, rotor resistance variation and low and high speed.

This paper examines the issue of improving the efficiency of a photovoltaic generator (GPV) using an artificial neural network (ANN) based MPPT scheme. Generally, PV modules exhibit nonlinear I-V characteristics with different MPPs depending on the solar irradiation and temperature. To ensure a maximum power transfer to the load form the GPV, it has to operate at its MPP. This is accomplished through matching impedance between the PV panel and the load using a DC-DC boost converter whose duty cycle is adjusted by artificial neural networks. With respect to the well known perturb and observe (P & O) MPPT, the obtained simulation results show that the considered ANN based approach is more efficient and oscillations around the MPP are significantly reduced.

To extract the five electrical parameters of the considered single diode model, the approach is formulated as a non convex optimization problem, and the GA is employed to overcome the nonlinear and transcendental nature of the circuit model. Compared to data provided by various manufacturers, the obtained simulation results show that our proposed approach is very efficient in estimating the electrical parameters of PV solar modules. Keywords— Photovoltaic (PV) module, parameter extraction, genetic algorithm, cost function.
This work proposes a sensorless control strategy for the induction motor (IM) using a Backsteppin... more This work proposes a sensorless control strategy for the induction motor (IM) using a Backstepping control and a nonlinear observer based on the circle-criterion approach. The Backstepping is a powerful control strategy that deals with nonlinear higher-order systems and includes non-measurable parameters related to the (IM). The nonlinear observer approach is intended to determine these important parameters. The circle-criterion approach is employed to determine the observer gain matrices as a solution of LMI (linear matrix inequalities) that guarantee the stability conditions of the designed observer. The main objective of this method is to solve the problem of the nonlinearities of the system which ensure the global asymptotic convergence of the observed dynamics and to improve the performance of the induction motors. The efficiency and correctness of the proposed scheme are proven by several numerical simulations.

The variation of the wind speed in terms of the altitude is required to evaluate the wind resources and predict the energy production of a given wind farm. Generally, the wind speed data, measured at a reference height, are extrapolated to the desired hub height using several empirical laws. In this paper, the power law method, suggested by Justus and Mikhail, is employed to extrapolate the Weibull parameters, using wind time series data obtained from the meteorological stations. Thus, the vertical extrapolated velocity is, then, used to evaluate the power and energy densities at heights of 30m and 60m. The obtained simulation results show that the considered site may be appropriate for small off-grid applications, but not for large wind turbines.

In this paper, we report an application of a proposed method for MDC to image coding. The method adds statistical redundancy to a set of data such that lost streams can be estimated from the received data. We employ a different way of forming the descriptions. The technique is shown to be more efficient and also overcomes the assumption that requires communication of the DC components reliably through other means.

Therefore, to efficiently manage grid-connected wind power farms, precise wind forecast is very useful and necessary. This paper seeks to find out the most appropriate discrete wavelet transform (DWT), combined with artificial neural networks (ANN), for wind speed forecasting. Wavelet decomposition is applied to obtain a smoothed wind speed signal for more accurate prediction through neural networks. Wind speed data of three cities from the northern Africa region are employed, namely Annaba, Sidi Bouzid and Tetouan located in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco respectively. The obtained simulation results show that the Daubechies wavelet db4 with 5level decomposition outperforms all other standard wavelets in terms of wind speed forecasting accuracy.

In this paper, we use the multiple description transform coding (MDTC) algorithm based on the wavelet transform that has been shown to be robust to packet losses allowing a graceful quality degradation. The case of transmitting still images with four descriptions is considered. We propose to use subband uniform quantization with different quantization steps, optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA), when compressing to a target bit-rate. Simulation results show that the proposed method offers substantial improvements in the case of packet loss when compared to previously reported work that applies uniform quantization with a fixed step size.
