In the introductory part, recent data are presented that document the importance that natural disasters have for the environment and for the Italian economy. Section 2 presents the Inte.Ri.M. project-the Internet of Things for Natural Risk Management-its purpose, activity plan, and bodies involved. Technical aspects are treated in Section 3 with the choice of hardware and software components and the solutions for collecting and transmitting data. Section 4 is about the economic aspects considering the stages of prevention, intervention, and restoration and the relation between the intensity of human activity and environment to define a range of situations. These scenarios call for different economic methodologies useful to estimate economic implications of each stage in the short, medium, and long term. Section 5 describes the structure of the Inte.Ri.M. management system and the foreseen functionalities. In the conclusion, the critical points are discussed, and the steps for the transposition of the work carried out on the territory are outlined, according to the provisions of the work program.

In the last 30 years several studies have focused on the measurement of the quality in the tourist organisations, in order to define a methodology able to evaluate their performances. The paper contribution to the debate is focused on the quality of service in a specific kind of accommodation, the mountain hut, which operates in a fragile habitat. The study presents the results of an empirical analysis on the perception of quality in the mountain huts conducted by interviewing 372 guests in the Piedmont Region in the north-western Italian Alps. The analysis highlights the importance, on the one hand, of a correct communication of the activities conducted by managers of the mountain huts and, on the other hand, the substance of avoiding a short-contact experience between guest and structure. Finally, the paper underlines how this experience was also useful in order to reason ...

As a business activity, the mountain hut interacts with the surrounding environment, and in doing so, generates inevitable impacts on this. As regards the public administration, the mountain hut category may represent a potential recipient of resources to the extent that it decides to encourage application of measures able to mitigate such impacts. This work describes a system of modelling the mountain hut activity at a double scale. The first describes the processes of the activity of each mountain hut and the relationships between these and protection of the surrounding environment, while the second level aggregates the individual models of 35 mountain huts of the Aosta Valley and describes system behaviour according to various strategies at aggregate level. The final aim is to establish, where sufficient quantitativ...

One of the aims of this three years long research, was the analysis of the technological installations and management of the environmental impacts in facilities located in the ski-areas of Valle d’Aosta (Italy). The paper shows the results relative to 71 structures (83% of the total).

This study presents the application and certification of the Environmental Management Systems in accordance with the ISO 14001:2004 International Standard, issued to the Town of Giaveno. Giaveno, situated in the North-West of Italy (Piedmont Region) with 17,000 inhabitants, has been involved in several actions concerning the correct management of environmental aspects resulting from its activities. The certification of its Environmental Management System – obtained in 2012 - represents an important tool for providing correct information to stakeholders (in primis the citizen) and to give proof of its sensitivity to the environmental issues.

Based on this assumption and on the particular Italian industrial fabric, characterized by small and medium enterprises, often grouped in clusters, it's even more important to focus on policy measures targeted for the sustainability development and competitiveness of product and process.

The methodology is one of the results of the participation to the Italy-Switzerland Transfrontier cooperation project 2007-2013 V.E.T.T.A. – Valorisation of Experiences and Transfrontier Tourism products at medium and high Altitude, commissioned by the Regione Piemonte as project leader. The general objectives of V.E.T.T.A. Project partners include improvement, promotion and valorisation of the tourist offer of mountain valleys within the pilot area (for Italy, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola).

Among the instruments adopted in recent years, organizations have begun to adopt the Integrated Management Systems, in order to merge into a single management tool the internationally models of Quality (ISO 9001), Environment (ISO 14001), Health and safety (OHSAS 18001) and Social Responsibility (SA8000). Although the same international standards clearly expressed a chance to integrate into a single management system, on the actual implementation procedures has opened a debate. The paper reports a peculiarity of the Italian case, in which a certification body has devised the BEST4 Scheme, which stands for Business Excellence Sustainable Task, to bring the four mentioned certification standards in one model. Today, 29 Italian corporate groups join this model.
