Lúcia Barrenechea is a native of Goiania, Brazil and currently holds a teaching position at the Instituto Villa-Lobos at UNIRIO - Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, including research and advising activities at its Graduate Program. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in piano performance from the Universidade Federal de Goiás and a Master’s in Music Degree from Boston University. She received her DMA in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa, also in the USA.
She has been featured as a soloist with the Orquestra Estadual de São Paulo, the Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás, the Orquestra Sinfônica de Goiânia, the Orquestra Sinfônica Jovem de Goiás, the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro, and the Orquestra Sinfônica de Barra Mansa, under the direction of Eleazar de Carvalho, Emanuel Martinez, Parcival Módolo, Eliseu Ferreira, Fabio Mechetti, Norton Morozowicz and Vladmir Prado. Ms. Barrenechea has been featured in recitals with great artists from national and international musical scenes. Since 1989, forms with her husband, the flutist Sérgio Barrenechea, the Duo Barrenechea, developing intense chamber music activities with the flute and piano formation. The Duo Barrenechea released, in 2008, their first commercial CD Moments in Paris, with French music for flute and piano. In 2010 the duo received the award PRÊMIO CIRCUITO FUNARTE DE MÚSICA CLÁSSICA, which resulted in a tour with concerts in ten Brazilian cities presenting the Project Brasileiríssimo!, with Brazilian repertoire for flute and piano. In 2012 the Project Brasileiríssimo! was resumed with six concerts in the USA.
Ms. Barrenechea has recorded, in 2008, a CD with works for piano trio, with violinist Mariana Salles and cellist Marcelo Salles, released by the label Brasil Meta Cultural. Her first solo album Saracoteio - Brazilian Piano has been released, in 2009, by the label Ethos Brasil. In 2009, she performed, as a member of the Ensemble Unirio, in a concert at the Hanoi Opera and masterclasses at the Hanoi Conservatory in Vietnam, as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations of Brazil with that country. In 2012, she toured in Europe with Sergio Barrenechea and Hugo Pilger, for the releasing of the triple CD The Flute Music of Francisco Mignone.
She has been frequently invited to teach and perform as a collaborative pianist in several festivals in Brazil, namely International Summer Festival of Brasilia (Civebra), Villa-Lobos Festival (Villa-Lobos Museum), Carlos Gomes International Brass Festival, International Flute Festival of ABRAF and International Festival of Pianists of Tatuí Conservatory.
In 2013 Ms. Barrenechea released, with cellist Hugo Pilger, the CD/DVD Presence of Villa-Lobos in Brazilian Music for Cello and Piano, which was finalist of the 26º Brazilian Music Award. Her last project, released in 2015, in a tour through 14 Brazilian cities, is the recording of a CD and DVD Brasileiríssimo: Encontros, which celebrates the 25 years of Duo Barrenechea’s career, featuring a selected repertoire of Brazilian works for flute and piano.
