Drawing on longitudinal qualitative research based on Moroccan and Romanian migrant workers living in Northern Italy, this chapter analyzes the effects of employment fragmentation on other social-accomplishment lines, such as gender identities and roles, and migration careers. Following the Chicago School’s conceptualization of ‘career’ and adopting the life-course approach, the chapter contributes to the advancement of social-science knowledge on two levels: it develops studies on gendered migrants’ working careers and on migration in times of crisis.

The political supranational, national and sub-national institutions define – through distinctions, separations and segmentations of rights – the recognition of citizenship rights. This article proposes some results concerning a broad research carried out on the cultural and social processes inherent in the construction of European citizenship. In particular, the paper focuses on the freedom of movement definition in order to grasp the processes of European citizenship construction, because it structures both the inclusion patterns and the borders of citizenship. The paper is based on the analysis of discourses of three different kinds of text: an European directive, two oral communication at the Italian Parliament and a municipal bylaw. The analysis will show the variations of the dominant discour...

Contact address: Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Education and Applied Psychology, University of Padua, Via M. Cesarotti 10/12, 35123 Padova, Italy. Drawing on a longitudinal research we conducted over fi ve years (2010–2015) with 40 documented migrant workers who lost their job at the beginning of the recession, this article analyses their routes to the informal economy in Northern Italy. Moving away from the expulsion and exit dichotomous theories on participation in underground work, we argue that it is necessary to take into consideration both the structural constraints pushing migrants to enter the informal economy and their subjective motivations, both economic and non-economic. Th rough two waves of in-depth interviews with Moroccan and Romanian workers, we investigate the migrants’ working paths in order to understand diff erent conditions and motivations driving them to work off the books. First, we highlight tha...

While it is true that most women migrate at a younger age, there are a significant number of cases of men and women who move abroad for labour purposes at a more advanced stage, undertaking a late-career migration. This is still an under-estimated and under-researched sub-field that uncovers a varied range of issues, including the global organization of reproductive work and the employment of migrant women as domestic workers late in their lives. By pooling the findings of two qualitative studies, this article focuses on Peruvian and Ukrainian women who seek employment in Spain and Italy when they are well into their forties, or older. A commonality the two groups of women share is that, independently of their level of education and professional ...

The analysis is based on a broad doctoral research carried out both in Ukraine and in Italy between 2005 and 2007. In particular, I investigate the subjective perception of downward mobility and how migrant women face this process of social devaluation and respond to it, taking into account that, in the case of Ukrainian female migration, the social skidding produced by migration goes hand in hand with the erosion of social and professional identity as experienced in their origin country during the 1990s. Thus, in order to comprehend the complexity of migration experiences it is necessary to analyse the migrants' whole life trajectories. The main results of the article are that Ukrainian migrant women give meaning to the process of devaluation by viewing it as an interlude in their life and as a sacrifice that serves to improve their families' upward social mobility. Furthermore, in order to mitigate the social skidding and the asymmetrical relationships that characterise domestic work, they prefer to personalise the relationship with their employers and to avoid working for low educated and working class people. Finally, Ukrainian domestic workers react to the homogenisation engendered by migration by differentiating themselves both from other foreign nationals employed in the same sector, and from the 'rough mass' of their fellow countrywomen.

In this context Health Literacy is a known factor contributing to immigrant health disparities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the health status of a population of migrant Moldovan women and their access to health care services in northern Italy by age class and health literacy level. Methods We administered an ad-hoc questionnaire to adult Moldovan women to assess their lifestyles, employment status, reported health status, access to Health Services and Health Literacy. Moreover, the study compared our data with a sample of Italian women of the same age range living in North-Eastern region interviewed in 2015. Analysis employs descriptive statistics. Results The sample included 170 Moldovan women (age 46.5 ±12.3). Prevalence of active smokers was found double in wom...

The purpose of this study was to examine the health status of a population of Moldovan migrant women, and their access to health care services in northern Italy, by age group and health literacy level. Methods: We administered an ad-hoc questionnaire to adult Moldovan women. A bivariate analysis was conducted to test the association between health literacy and age groups with other variables (lifestyles, symptoms and diseases, access to health services). A stepwise logistic regression analysis was run to test the association between access to primary care and health literacy. Moreover, the study compare Moldovan women data with a sample of Italian women of the same age range living in North-Eastern region. Results: Our sample included 170 Moldovan women (aged 46.5 ± 12.3) in five occupational categories: home care workers (28.2%); cleaners (27.1%); health care workers (5.9%); other occupati...
