Anticipating the rise and degenerate of the degradation processes for urban landscape, is an area of research that requires the deployment of analysis and forecasting, informed to the impacts induced by climatic and environmental pressures on settlements. Taking into account historic areas, the study focuses upon the need to set up a practice-based research, rethinking the processes of condition's relief, by integrating deterioration data with the prediction of the impact-induced by microclimate processes. The paper introduces as a case study, a nineteenth-century neighborhood in Naples, completed in 1869-80, with the reorganisation of the waterfront, filling the beach and constructing new buildings. The degradation reliefs, on sight and instrumental, carried out with the support of the infrared camera in three different moments of the building life cycle (2002, 2011, 2013), constitutes the knowledge base to relate degenerative phenomena with the constructive, morphological and dimensional characteristics and contextual conditions. The infrared remote sensing, long used through the two-dimensional display of the measurement of irradiation in order to evaluate the performance of the building (to detect insulation defects, thermal bridges, the heat loss through the windows, the humidity) is adopted to bind information about the phenomena taking place in location factors, climatic and environmental conditions. The observation of the related iterated and superimposed effects of decay allows the scheduling of control actions, with the intent to prevent an overrun of critical performance thresholds. A recursive approach characterizes the investigation procedure, based on forecast and verifiability.

The paper deals with strategies for built heritage protection, creating conditions of design synergy between citizens, users and administrators. Sharing the constructive knowledge is a prerequisite for tackling settlements' vulnerability, contrasting the imbalance between public and private. The research takes as a case study the historic urban landscape of Sassano in the Cilento National Park. Thirty years later the 80's earthquake, built environments' transformations are linked both to the lack of technical knowledge and to a misuse of public funding for reconstructing. The paper testifies the effort to reverse a trend aiming to erase the constructive identity of landscapes. Acquiring and disseminating architectural and technological knowledge opens the path to development scenarios, arising from the sharing of context-aware protective micro actions.

Regeneration processes activate stable regimes of interaction and interdependence among the architectural, economic, cultural and social sub-systems in settlements. The thesis of this paper is that in order to progress towards sustainable and inclusive cities, urban governance should widen the decision-making arena, promoting virtuous circular dynamics based on knowledge transfer, strategic decision making and stakeholders’ engagement. During the 20 th century, several uncontrolled processes compromise the dynamics and trends of technological transitions that for centuries, had been characterizing the built environment and the manufacturing processes. In the agenda drawn by the Sustainable Transition Network, referring to manufacturing landscapes, the transition is a long process, deeply rooted to cultural and settlement specificities, to the skills of the workforce, to the opening of new markets, to the community needs. In a circular perspective for development, returning congruence to productive cycles, by linking them to the settlements vocations and communities' skills, is the design commitment. Taking into account the systemic vision for the built and performance approach, a design strategy is experienced during three years, for the Vesuvius foodscape. It consists of three main phases: *outlining the relationships between places and manufacturing, in terms of processes, products and wastes, *mapping the technological transition processes occurring at the architectural and urban scales, *defining compatibility ranges for shortening the loops and promoting inclusive technological innovations. The project outlines a regeneration strategy informed to the following visions: 1. The productive landscape is a common good, a complex system resulting from the encounter between resources and technological thinking. 2. Strengthening the community skills is an indispensable condition for promoting regeneration. 3. The third sector, social, economic and cultural reality of a private nature but tended to produce public or collective goods and services can be a privileged actor of sustainability.

The research aim concerns the analysis of US advanced regeneration practices to learn and transfer the principles derived from them to the European context. This transferability takes place through the construction of regeneration criteria for the coastal ecosystems rebalancing. The regeneration criteria are resulted from an ecosystem reading of the winning projects of the Rebuild by Design competition. These practices represent in the scientific literature an exceptional example of a holistic response to the problem of post-disaster intervention. Often in the past, the great disasters (environmental calamities, earthquakes, epidemics) activated unexpressed energies, triggering transformations of the built environment, able to give rise unexpected conditions of economic, cultural and social development. The fragility of settlement systems in the face of unexpected threats brings out the need for a new planning, changing our gaze on the city. The new framework of needs drawn by the pandemic and the renewed sensitivity towards the combination of health – sustainability, rekindle the spotlight on inner areas. These emerged as "reservoirs of resilience", areas to look at, in order to reach an eco-systemic balance. Deep changes in urban frameworks, challenge contemporary cities, where often, common spaces formerly central, risk an indissoluble physical degradation, due to processes of social marginalization. Architects are asked to face the developmental dynamics for spaces of anonymity, every day more numerous, working on previous attitudes as aggregation and relation junctions. Moving from the description of the design criteria that inform the rehabilitation for the ancient area of Corso Garibaldi in Naples, the paper introduces a critical thinking about the links between space’ performances and attitudes towards inclusivity. Urban and architectural solutions are privileged means in order to return to citizenship the right to public space, reaffirming the concept of common space as dwelling, residence of the community, with the creation of new social ties and the growth of local shared identities.
