Linguistics and Nigerian Languages

A review of psycholinguistic theories found in the Muqaddimah shows the breadth of Ibn Khaldūn's understanding of human behaviour, including language behaviour. His views on the influence of change on human habits, the relationship between language, knowledge and perception, and on the influence of constant repetition on language acquisition are, with minor modifications, valid even in the contemporary period. The causes he described for language corruption and the limitation of non-Arabs in learning Arabic are still worth examining.

This paper discusses bibliographic characteristics of research articles that appear in the Nigerian Institute of Agricultural Engineering (NIAE) proceedings between 2000 and 2010, covering a period of 10 years accumulation. It spelt out the number of research articles published in NIAE proceeding every year between the stated periods and also the specific areas covered in the field of agricultural engineering, appraises the pattern of authorship, institutional spread of articles, academic and gender status of the authors. The methodology adopted was mainly documentary. Using the above parameters, a total number of 589 articles were published in the NIAE proceedings in the period under study where farm power and machinery have the highest research articles i.e. 25% of the total articles published in the proceedings. University have a total number of 795 authors representing 60.40% in the analysis of degree of institutional spread of authors followed by research institutes with 266 authors representing 20.2%. One thousand, two hundred and ninety one (1291) authors' academic status was not indicated. 10

There is no doubt that collaboration is a common phenomenon in research. This paper examined the collaborative strength and patterns of authorship among agricultural engineers in Nigeria, using the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE) proceedings between 2000 and 2010 with the exclusion of 2008 data, covering a period of 10 years. The results of the data were analysed based on the number of articles published per year, pattern of authorship featured in the proceedings, and the collaborative degree and strength of authors. There are a total number of 589 articles published by 1315 authors in the years under study. Out of the 589 articles, 421 (71.5%) are joint works while only 168 (28.5%) are single authored works. The degree of author's collaboration was also calculated to be 0.715, while the mean numbers of single authored and joint authored articles are 16.8 and 42.1 respectively. In this research, the average numbers of author per paper are between 1.9 and 2.7. The author's productivity revealed that two authors ranked first with 14 published articles credited to each of them while many other authors also ranked high differently.

This paper examines the role of Research Libraries as regard the information needs of Agric Engineers
in Nigeria, using the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization library as a case study. It further
stressed the importance of the library in Agricultural Engineering Research cum its effect on research
development. Recommendations on how to further improve the impact of the library on Agric.

Language is an extremely important tool in any society. Its’ indispensability nature
always necessitates the continuous development. Apart from using language for
communication, language is also used for education. In fact, without language, there is
no education. A library is one of the tools that thus preserves and keep language for
education. The objective of this paper is to examine the role libraries play in the
preservation and development of languages in any society. This paper explains how the
library functions as “language bank” by preserving the linguistically
documented/recorded information, ideas, history etc. The paper laid much emphasis on
the crucial roles of libraries in preserving languages, especially the endangered ones.

Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in the present age has become an indispensable means of passing information
to an individual or a group. This paper examines the extent to which ICT is utilized in information dissemination to farmers in
Nigeria, using the Kwara State Cassava Growers Association as a case study. The results of data obtained from 105 registered farmers
under the said association, shows that 64.8% of the farmers registered under the state government are only educated below OND
level. 91.4% of the farmers preferred text messaging as the only means of receiving any information from the government. Some of
the factors, as identified in this research; that influence the preferred source if information by the farmers are: availability, cost, level
of education, and computer literacy. Recommendations on how to improve and widen the means of information dissemination from
the government to the farmers were also given.

This paper seeks to investigate the factors that enhance scholarly publishing among researchers using three
agricultural research institutions in Ilorin, Kwara State of Nigeria. The research identified factors such as motivation
or incentives, training, collaboration, etc as important factors that can either influence scholarly publishing
positively or negatively. A response from 120 researchers was analyzed to establish why researchers in the three
Institutes engage in research and scholarly publishing, and the factors that influence their research and scholarly
publishing. The result of the analyses shows that scholarly publishing is greatly enhanced by incentives, availability
and accessibility of information, collaboration, training, and computer literacy.

Gender imbalances is not just reflected in education from the surface level, but more
narrowly, highly established and sensitive in book publishing. This paper examines the level of
gender imbalances and sensitivity in book publishing using NCAM library collection as a case
study. The researchers used 446 textbooks with 802 authors to establish the difference in the
number of male authors in comparison with that of female authors in textbook publishing.
Recommendation on how to bridge the gap in gender imbalances relating to book publishing
and education as a whole are also given

This research work seeks to investigate the rate of utilization of electronic library and in particular, The Essential Electronic Agricultural Library (TEEAL) by researchers. While analysing the data in this research work, it was discovered that although 99% of the respondents have heard about TEEAL and the usefulness, only very few of the respondents actually utilize the electronic library. This poor utilization was however linked to several points such as poor power supply, inadequate computer systems in the library and limitations in the accessibility of the library due to working hours. The researchers of this work however discovered that researchers still prefer other means of sourcing research information such as Google search and periodicals, which can be easily accessed via the mobile telephone and related devices.

An in-house journal is a medium of communication that projects the image of a company or an organization or outside, with the purpose of improving employee morale. According to English oxford Dictionary, in-house journal is a publication produced by a particular firm, institution, or society and dealing mainly with its own activities. It could be a newspaper produced by a company to tell employees what is happening in the company or organization. In-house journals have been given a variety of names, such as newsletters, employee newspapers and company newspapers, but, in effect, they carry out the same function. In-house journals are private publications and therefore discussed separately from the commercial press. There are also two distinct kinds of house journals: internals for staff and externals for outside publics. The two are distinct and should not be expected to serve the dual purpose of serving, for example, employees and customers. In-house publications are not confined to the world of commerce and industry, even if in-house journal editors have, in the past, been given the curious title of '' industrial editors''. In-fact, private magazines and newspapers are published by almost every kind of organization, whether it is in the public or private sector, commercial or not-for-profit. Although some of these previously printed publications have converted in whole or part to electronic media, it is not so much the medium but the message that is important, and which medium best suits the function of reaching the target public. The sales bulletin is a regular communication, perhaps weekly, between a sales manager and sales representative in the field. In house journal can also be seen as publications produce by a particular firm, institution, or society and dealing mainly with its own activities.
