Parallel Bubbles - Evaluation of Three Techniques for Representing Mixed Categorical and Continuous Data in Parallel Coordinates

In this paper we discuss the techniques that aim to enhance the representation of categorical data in Parallel Coordinates. We propose Parallel Bubbles, a method that improves the graphical perception of categorical dimensions in Parallel Coordinates by adding a visual encoding of frequency. Our main contribution consists in a user study that compares the performance of three variants of Parallel Coordinates, with similarity and frequency tasks. We base our design choices on the literature review, and on the research guidelines provided by Johansson and Forsell (2016). Parallel Bubbles are a good trade-off between Parallel Coordinates and Parallel Sets in terms of performance for both types of tasks. Adding a visual encoding of frequency leads to a significant difference in performance for a frequency-based task consisting in assessing the most represented category. This study is the first of a series that will aim at testing the three visualization methods in tasks centered on the continuous axis, and where we assume that the performance of Parallel Sets will be worse.

A Descriptive Attribute-Based Framework for Annotations in Data Visualization

Annotations are observations made during the exploration of a specific data visualization, which ... more Annotations are observations made during the exploration of a specific data visualization, which can be recorded as text or visual data selection. This article introduces a classification framework that allows a systematic description of annotations. To create the framework, a real dataset of 302 annotations authored by 16 analysts was collected. Then, three coders independently described the annotations by eliciting categories that emerged from the data. This process was repeated for several iterative phases, until a high inter-coder agreement was reached. The final descriptive attribute-based framework comprises the following dimensions: insight on data, multiple observations, data units, level of interpretation, co-references and detected patterns. This framework has the potential to provide a common ground to assess the expressiveness of different types of visualization over the same data. This potential is further illustrated in a concrete use case.

Annotations produced by analysts during the exploration of a data visualization are a precious so... more Annotations produced by analysts during the exploration of a data visualization are a precious source of knowledge. Harnessing this knowledge requires a thorough structure of annotations, but also a means to acquire them without harming user engagement. The main contribution of this article is a method, taking the form of an interface, that offers a comprehensive “subject-verb-complement” set of steps for analysts to take annotations, and seamlessly translate these annotations within a prior classification framework. Technical considerations are also an integral part of this study: through a concrete web implementation, we prove the feasibility of our method, but also highlight some of the unresolved challenges that remain to be addressed. After explaining all concepts related to our work, from a literature review to JSON Specifications, we follow by showing two use cases that illustrate how the interface can work in concrete situations. Nous proposons les Parallel Bubbles, une méthode basée sur la fréquence améliorant la perception graphique des dimensions catégorielles dans les Coordonnées Parallèles. Nous réalisons une étude utilisateur comprenant des tâches de similarité et de fréquence, en comparant trois variations des Coordonnées Parallèles. Les Parallel Bubbles représentent un bon compromis en matière de performance pour les deux types de tâches et l'ajout d'un encodage visuel de fréquence provoque une différence significative dans la performance. Cette étude pose le premier jalon d'une série d'articles dont la suite aura comme objectif de tester les trois visualisations dans des tâches portant sur l'axe numérique, et dans lesquels le Parallel Set sera probablement moins performant.
