This study investigated the relationship between mentorship and professional competence of newly ... more This study investigated the relationship between mentorship and professional competence of newly employed lecturers in Universities in Cross River State, Nigeria. One research question was raised and one hypothesis formulated to guide the study. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of all academic staff of University of Calabar and Cross River State University of Science and Technology. The cluster random sampling technique and simple random sampling technique were used in selecting 220 lecturers from 10 faculties in the two universities in the study area. Researcher-designed instrument with four-point rating scale titled "mentoring and professional competence of newly employed lecturers" questionnaire" (MPCNELQ) was adopted to elicit responses from the respondents and to collect data. It had 24 items which were validated by two experts in measurements and evaluation. The trial test carried out using splithalf method yielded reliability coefficients of 0.77 to 0.87. These figures confirmed that the instrument was reliable for use in realizing the research objectives. Mean and standard deviations were used to answer the research question while Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to analyze data for the hypothesis which was tested at.05 level of significance. Results obtained revealed five areas of professional competence that could be enhanced through mentoring and that there was a significant relationship between mentoring and professional competence of newly employed lecturers. Based on this result, recommendations were made to enhance professional competence of newly employed lecturers in universities in Cross River State.

This study investigated the effectiveness of entrepreneurship educators in universities in Cross ... more This study investigated the effectiveness of entrepreneurship educators in universities in Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the aims of the study, one research question was raised and two null hypotheses formulated to guide the study. All the entrepreneurship education students in the two Universities in Cross River State-University of Calabar (UNICAL) and Cross River State University of Science and Technology (CRUTECH), constituted the study population. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select three hundred (300) entrepreneurship education students from the two universities as the study sample. Data was collected using a 20-item questionnaire titled "Effectiveness of Entrepreneurship Educators Questionnaire" (EEEQ) developed by the researchers. Data obtained were analyzed using Mean, Population t-test (one sample mean), and Independent t-test. The results obtained revealed that the effectiveness of entrepreneurship educators in universities in Cross River State is not significantly high in terms of selection of appropriate pedagogy, students' motivation and arrangement for business tours. The results obtained further revealed that effectiveness of entrepreneurship educators does not significantly differ by their institution affiliation. Based on these results, it was concluded that entrepreneurship education is yet to create a significant impact in enhancing learners' acquisition of entrepreneurship attitude. It was therefore recommended that entrepreneurship educators should be provided with intensive training and possibly made to be entrepreneurs themselves.

The study investigated professional development practices as predictors of job effectiveness of p... more The study investigated professional development practices as predictors of job effectiveness of public secondary school teachers in Calabar Metropolis. Survey research design was adopted for the study. One research question was raised and one null hypothesis formulated to guide the study. One thousand, three hundred and eighty-six (1,386) teachers teaching in 23 public secondary schools in the two local government areas used for the study constituted the study population. Through stratified random sampling technique, 350 teachers were selected as the study sample. Data was collected using 42-item research questionnaire titled "Professional Development Practices and Teachers' Effectiveness Questionnaire" (PDPTEQ). Data obtained were analyzed using Multiple Regression analysis. Results obtained revealed that; orientation training, refresher training, career development training, continuing professional development, mentoring, and in-service training are significant predictors of effectiveness of secondary school teachers in their job. Based on the findings, it was concluded that secondary schools in Cross River State, particularly those in Calabar Metropolis can successfully accomplish educational goals if teachers are provided with various forms of professional development. This can improve their job effectiveness to produce desired output from secondary educational system. It was recommended that government should provide professional development training to teachers to enhance their job effectiveness.

This study assessed quality assurance practice in building world class universities in South-Sout... more This study assessed quality assurance practice in building world class universities in South-South geo-political zone, Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design, with three research questions posed to guide the study. The population of the study comprised 4,520 lecturers in three federal universities in the study area. Using simple random sampling technique, 678 lecturers were proportionally selected from the population as the study sample. A validated research questionnaire was used for data collection, with the reliability established at 0.86 using Cronbach coefficient Alpha. The collected data were analyzed using Mean and Standard deviations. The results from the analysis showed that the level of implementation of quality assurance practices to enhance building of world class universities is low. The estimation of the studied institutions on universities world standard features showed some of the features to be inadequate and some to be totally absent. The challenges of quality assurance practices implementation were seen to include, but not limited to inadequate government funding, massification of students' intake, weak institutional leadership, and so on. Based on these findings, it was concluded that quality assurance practices in building world class universities in South-South Nigeria is inadequate and confronted with some challenges. When these challenges are surmounted, will enhance building of universities with world class standard. Meanwhile some possible strategies that can enhance quality assurance practices in building world class universities were suggested. Their implementation may enhance the institutions to produce students that possess the required skills for global competitiveness.

Based on the results and findings from the study, it was recommended that; education should be well funded to enhance meeting up with the required standard of University education that will yield quality outputs for the development of economy and maintenance of social order in Nigeria.
