Ansgar Zerfass, Dr., born 1965, is Professor and Chair of Strategic Communication at Leipzig University, Germany, and Professor of Communication and Leadership at BI Norwegian Business School, Oslo, Norway. He serves as editor of the "International Journal of Strategic Communication" and lead researcher for the Communication Monitor series, the largest empirical studies on strategic communication practices worldwide with several editions: European Communication Monitor (ECM), North American Communication Monitor (NACM), Latin-American Communication Monitor (LCM) and Asia-Pacific Communication Monitor (APCM). ABSTRACT A key aspect for understanding and explaining online communication is the micro level of... more ABSTRACT A key aspect for understanding and explaining online communication is the micro level of communication practitioners’ social media usage and their general attitudes towards digital platforms. This paper investigates how public relations practitioner&#39;s personal and professional use of social media is related to their perceptions of social media. A quantitative methodology was applied to perform this research. A population of 2710 professionals from 43 European countries working on different hierarchical levels both in communication departments and agencies across Europe were surveyed as part of a larger transnational online survey. Results show that practitioners with a high level of usage of social media give more importance to social media channels, influence of social media on internal and external stakeholders and relevance of key gatekeepers and stakeholders along with a better self-estimation of competences. Issues about diverse levels of overestimation of social media use, application and importance in the professional arena are also debated.

Desde su primera edición en 2007, los resultados del European Communication Monitor (ECM) han per... more Desde su primera edición en 2007, los resultados del European Communication Monitor (ECM) han permitido identificar las tendencias en relaciones públicas y la gestión de la comunicación en Europa, describiendo las características principales de los profesionales del sector, así como los instrumentos de comunicación que utilizan, los temas estratégicos, roles ejecutivos o su influencia en las decisiones corporativas, entre otros aspectos. Esta macroencuesta transnacional, que en 2011 contó con la participación de 2.209 profesionales de 43 países, se lleva a cabo en colaboración con académicos de once universidades europeas, la European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA) y el apoyo de la European Association of Communication Directors (EACD).

ABSTRACT The practice of communication management and public relations in Europe has, according t... more ABSTRACT The practice of communication management and public relations in Europe has, according to theory, a reflective character. The key aspect of this reflective communication management is to view the organization from the perspective of the public sphere. Important aspects of reflective communication management are the extent to which communication recommendations are taken seriously by senior management, if and how communicative arguments and reputational considerations are factored into strategic decision making and planning in the organization, the involvement of communication professionals in corporate social responsibility, the use of research and equal positions for male and female practitioners. A secondary analysis of data from the European Communication Monitor 2008 and 2009, a cross national survey among European communication professionals, indicates that communication management in Europe indeed is developing in the direction of reflective communication management. Evidence is presented for the Netherlands and for different regions in Europe.
