Already the actual laying methods can be described as modular, above all due to the division of labor by several mosaicists or even mosaicist teams. This modular division was not only based on economical reasoning, but also affected the visual appearance of the finished work.
Furthermore, different motives thereby achieved a certain degree of interchangeability which made the general design during the setting process somewhat flexible. In connection with economical and practical reasons, materials could also be used modularly. Various tesserae, most notably stone and glass tesserae, interacted with each other, expressed by differences in materiality. Additionally, preliminary drawings, which were sometimes intentionally visible through wider gaps in between tesserae, also affected the appearance and perception of the mosaic. Different materials always interact with each other, thereby helping to achieve and maintain the intended effect regardless of different materials’ availability.
