Mit einer beeindrucken-den Karriere, die sich über fast vier Jahrzehnte erstreckt, hat Kolkin die seltene Fähigkeit bewiesen, seine professionelle Laufbahn als Arzt mit seiner Leidenschaft für die Fotografie zu vereinen. The Kokonor region, often referred to as northeastern Amdo, comprising nowadays China's Qinghai p... more The Kokonor region, often referred to as northeastern Amdo, comprising nowadays China's Qinghai province, is a culturally transitional area considerably influenced by the diverse cultures of the Tibetans, Mongolic groups, Chinese, and the ethnically complex Muslim communities. In this article we provide a broad contextual framework regarding the Christian missions in the Kokonor area during the late 19 th century and early Republican time, an area described as follows: "For the true Chinese this region is a land of scarcity, but the European finds compensations for the lack of the produce from the gardens and orchards of the "blessed land," for beef and mutton are plentiful, milk is to be found, and butter-much of it of doubtful freshness-is to be had." 1 Due to the lack of other sources on food consumption and offerings in that area, we present excerpts from published works of missionaries on food and religious food offerings. 2 This area has a long history in terms of Christian missions, tracing, according to some authors, back to the Nestorians during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) as well as to the Italian Franciscan Giovanni da Pian del Carpine (John of Plano Carpini) and the Flemish Franciscan missionary Willem van Ruysbroeck (William of Rubruck), who traveled to the courts of the Mongol khans already prior to the foundation of the Yuan

Christian Missionaries’ Ethnographic Accounts of Diets and Foodways in the Area of Kokonor during the late 19th Century and Early Republican Time, 2023

The paper deals with the description of food(s) used in religious rituals and in daily life in th... more The paper deals with the description of food(s) used in religious rituals and in daily life in the Kokonor area from the point of view of Christian missionaries. By looking at Christian missionaries’ reports of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican time, light is shed on selected societies in the Kokonor region – namely the Tibetans and Mongolic groups, such as the Monguors – with an emphasis on these societies’ diets and foodways. Food is at the core of everyday life, not speaking about festive occasions. Moreover, food and beverages with their symbolism constitute an important part of religious practice. On the basis of missionary reports, such as those by French Lazarist missionaries, missionaries of the Belgian Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae, and missionaries of the Societas Verbi Divini, besides the mundane description of daily food(s), we also highlight how spe- cial ingredients became an essential part of ritual offerings and how food exchange and shared eating was understood to create a bridge between humans and super-mundane beings.

This historical pastoral area South of the Yellow River is a border area where, a milieu was created due to the long-term mutual contacts between Tibetans and Mongols, in which specific local customs, language patterns, and social communities have emerged. The initial turning point in their ethnical and cultural identity was the integration into the modern Chinese State in 1954, followed by ethnic classification. Moreover the local pastoral Mongol and Tietan populations have been transformed into minority nationalities is-á-vis the Han Chinese, and many Tibetans even were classified as Mengguzu (Mongols), however, perceived as Tibet-Mongols (Tib. Dieser Artikel leistet einen kulturanthropologischen Beitrag zur Bedeutung des Essens als Kulturg... more Dieser Artikel leistet einen kulturanthropologischen Beitrag zur Bedeutung des Essens als Kulturgut Tibets in der Schweiz mit Fokus auf das sogenannte «tibetische Nationalgericht» der Momo, gefüllten Teigtaschen. Anhand kulturwissenschaftlicher und-historischer Konzepte wird die Bedeutung der Momo in Tibet sowie in der Diaspora basierend auf historischen Reiseberichten, modernen Kochbüchern und Erzählungen der vorwiegend älteren in der Schweiz lebenden Generation von TibeterInnen beschrieben. Weiter wird auf die Präsenz von Momo in der Schweizer Gastronomielandschaft sowie auf die Gründe für deren Erfolgsgeschichte in der Schweiz eingegangen.

This historical pastoral area South of the Yellow River is a border area where, a milieu was created due to the long-term mutual contacts between Tibetans and Mongols, in which specific local customs, language patterns, and social communities have emerged. The initial turning point in their ethnical and cultural identity was the integration into the modern Chinese State in 1954, followed by ethnic classification. Moreoer the local pastoral Mongol and Ti etan populations ha e een transformed into minority nationalities is-vis the Han Chinese, and many Tibetans even were classified as Mengguzu (Mongols), however, perceived as Tibet-Mongols (Tib. Bod Sog) by themselves and their neighbours. By looking at the outstanding historical figure of Tashi Tsering, the last Mongol qinwang of the Henan grasslands at the Sino-Tibetan borderlands, this paper examines how the people of the Henan grasslands integrate their memory of the local traditional leader into their identity construction, and how they revive their Mongolness despite their seclusion from other Mongol communities.

Jeder eingereichte Artikel wird zwei GutachterInnen anonymisiert zur Begutachtung zugeleitet (double-blind-Verfahren). ASIEN ist die Mitgliederzeitschrift der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Asienkunde e. V. Die Redaktion freut sich besonders, wenn Mitglieder der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Asienkunde die Zeitschrift durch Übersendung von Aufsätzen zu einschlägigen Themen sowie von Rezensionen, Konferenzberichten und Informationen zu Forschung und Lehre unterstützen. ASIEN erscheint vierteljährlich. Mitglieder erhalten ASIEN kostenlos. Ein Jahresabonnement kostet 80,00 Euro (zzgl. Porto und Versand). Hinweise für Autoren und Autorinnen Manuskripte sollten in Deutsch oder Englisch abgefasst sein und müssen dem ASIEN style guide entsprechen. Dies gilt besonders für wiss. Artikel. R. innerhalb von 2 Monaten Bescheid, ob und mit welcher Kritik sein/ihr Beitrag zur Veröffentlichung angenommen wurde. Für die Überarbeitung des Beitrags hat der/die Autor/in 4 Wochen Zeit. Ungefähr 4 Wochen vor Drucklegung erhält der/die Autor/in seinen/ihren Beitrag zur Korrektur. Zu prüfen ist der Beitrag auf Druckfehler, Vollständigkeit und Stellung der Abbildungen und Tabellen sowie auf eventuell von der Redaktion angemerkte Fragen. Den Umfang verändernde Verbesserungen müssen unterbleiben. Research Notes sollten 35-40.000 Zeichen (ohne Leerzeichen) nicht überschreiten (ca. 15 Heftseiten). Folgende Angaben sollten vorhanden sein: Konferenztitel, Veranstalter, Ort, Datum. Rezensionen sollten 5.000 Zeichen (ohne Leerzeichen) nicht überschreiten. Sie sollten u. a. Informationen über das Anliegen und die Thesen des Autors/der Autorin/Autoren enthalten, den Inhalt der Publikation kurz skizzieren und evtl. auch auf die mögliche(n) Zielgruppe(n) hinweisen. Die Veröffentlichung erfolgt sobald wie möglich. Folgende Angaben sollten vorhanden sein: Autor, Buchtitel, Ort: Verlag, Jahr. Seitenzahl, Preis. Nach Veröffentlichung erhält der/die Autor/in ein Belegexemplar der Zeitschrift sowie seinen/ihren Beitrag als PDF-Dokument inklusive Umschlag und Inhaltsverzeichnis. One in-tended strategic value of this initiative is the improvement of relations between China and its neigh-bours as well as the improvement of dialogue among different civilizations. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the shared historical cultural heritage of the involved ethnic groups, while the idea of a ‘harmonious society’ is promoted at the same time. China consists of a mosaic of many territorial ethnic groups whose historic homelands have been i... more China consists of a mosaic of many territorial ethnic groups whose historic homelands have been incorporated into the modern Chinese state, a process by which the respective populations transformed from a “sovereign or semi-sovereign people” (Bulag 2002: 9) on China's periphery into “minority nationalities” ([Formula: see text], shaoshu minzu). In 1950 Mao Zedong initiated the “Ethnic Classification Project” whose effect has been the marginalisation of the minority nationalities. In this paper, I explore the marginalisation of the Mongol population of contemporary Henan Mongolian Autonomous County within the Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southeastern Qinghai Province. Die anonymisierten Artikel werden von (mindestens) zwei GutachterInnen begutachtet. Der/die Autor/in bekommt i. d. R. innerhalb von 2 Monaten Bescheid, ob und mit welcher Kritik sein/ihr Beitrag zur Veröffentlichung angenommen wurde. Für die Überarbeitung des Beitrags hat der/die Autor/in 4 Wochen Zeit. Ungefähr 4 Wochen vor Drucklegung erhält der/die Autor/in seinen/ihren Beitrag zur Korrektur. Zu prüfen ist der Beitrag auf Druckfehler, Vollständigkeit und Stellung der Abbildungen und Tabellen sowie auf eventuell von der Redaktion angemerkte Fragen. Konferenzberichte sollten 5.000 Zeichen (ohne Leerzeichen) nicht überschreiten. Die Veröffentlichung erfolgt, soweit möglich, im nächsten folgenden Heft. Folgende Angaben sollten vorhanden sein: Konferenztitel, Veranstalter, Ort, Datum. Rezensionen sollten 5.000 Zeichen (ohne Leerzeichen) nicht überschreiten. Sie sollten u. a. Informationen über das Anliegen und die Thesen des Autors/der Autorin/Autoren enthalten, den Inhalt der Publikation kurz skizzieren und evtl. auch auf die mögliche(n) Zielgruppe(n) hinweisen. In 1950 Mao Zedong initiated the “Ethnic Classification Project” whose effect has been the marginalisation of the minority nationalities. In this paper, I explore the marginalisation of the Mongol population of contemporary Henan Mongolian Autonomous County within the Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southeastern Qinghai Province. Diese ethnografische Arbeit befasst sich mit der semi-nomadischen Bevölkerung einer mongolischen ... more Diese ethnografische Arbeit befasst sich mit der semi-nomadischen Bevölkerung einer mongolischen Enklave, dem mongolischen autonomen Verwaltungskreis Henan, innerhalb eines tibetischen autonomen Verwaltungsbezirks in der nordwestchinesischen Provinz Qinghai. Bei dieser Enklave handelt es sich um ein komplexes ethnisches Umfeld, in dem heute ca. 39.000 Menschen leben, von denen ungefähr 90 Prozent als Mongolen klassifiziert sind. Diese Mongolen sprechen fast ausschließlich Tibetisch. Die tibetisch-mongolische Identität – was soll das sein und wie charakterisiert sie sich? Unter Heranziehung verschiedener Theorien über Erinnerung und Gedächtnis wird die Frage nach der Konstruktion ihrer kollektiven Identität in Anbetracht ihrer Positionierung innerhalb des chinesischen Staates, aber vor allem innerhalb des tibetischen Kulturraums von Amdo beantwortet. Diese Studie leistet einen neuen Beitrag zum Verständnis der Heterogenität und Komplexität der Nationalitätenfrage in China mit Blick auf lokale Interaktionen zwischen unterschiedlich ethnischen Bevölkerungssegmenten, die zu ethnischen Vermischungen führen.

Concerning general knowledge on the Daur for the readers of this thematic issue, we give a brief outline of the history of research on the Daur, followed by a description of not only the ethnic issues concerning the Daur, Orochen, and Solons, but also the spoken and written languages of the Daur. In order to cover aspects of Daur literature and folklore, remarks on the Nisan Shaman are also included. This is followed by seven contributions detailing historical, anthropological, and linguistic approaches to the topic of the Daur.
