In 2003, Ireland's national broadcaster RTÉ screened a digitally re-mastered version of' Strumpet City', its own classic seven-part adaptation of James Plunkett's novel which was first broadcast in March and April of 1980. This is a detailed reading of the programme in its contemporary context, arguing that it provides us with the opportunity to re-assess the series and to gauge just how Ireland has changed in the interim two decades.
