The essay looks at the dominant mode of representing political violence in Ireland in the media in Britain. The article has an historical focus that looks specifically at 19th century images and contrasts these with late twentieth century representations.

An essay commissioned by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and published as a pamphlet with el... more An essay commissioned by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and published as a pamphlet with eleven other essays which look at the ways in which various art forms responded to thirty years of 'the Troubles' in Northern Ireland. This essay considers a range of film and television drama over the years and argues that for most of the time, film and television drama ignored the politics behind the violence to concentrate on the impact that violence had on individuals and society in general. Any film or television drama which did venture into the politics behind the violence tended to create considerable controversy. With the peace process under way from 1993 onwards, film and especially television drama became more daring and more probing.

This is chapter 2 of the book 'Rock and Popular Music in Ireland: Before and After U2' and traces... more This is chapter 2 of the book 'Rock and Popular Music in Ireland: Before and After U2' and traces the beginnings of Irish rock in the island's two main cities, Belfast and Dublin. The argument here is that Belfast bands had a harder, more rhythm and blues feel than the more poppy and folky music in Dublin. Eventually, though, Dublin becomes the more dominant force in popular music as Belfast was wracked by the 'Troubles'.

In 2003, Ireland's national broadcaster RTÉ screened a digitally re-mastered version of' Strumpet City', its own classic seven-part adaptation of James Plunkett's novel which was first broadcast in March and April of 1980. This is a detailed reading of the programme in its contemporary context, arguing that it provides us with the opportunity to re-assess the series and to gauge just how Ireland has changed in the interim two decades.
