Therefore, exploring the use of services through a non-traditional student placement was a crucial first step in understanding how to develop capacity for such services. It was also important to develop an understanding of the ways in which the implementation of this student placement influenced learning in the context of a Malaysian CBR programme. Method: An action research study was designed to implement and evaluate student speech-language pathology (SLP) placement within a Malaysian community-based rehabilitation (CBR) centre for children with communication disabilities. Data collection involved the learning experiences of key adult stakeholders (students, workers, parents, and the principal research investigator (PI) or lead author). Results: Study findings indicated that all adult learners became better empowered by working together. Workers involved in impairment-focussed rehabilitation activities grew in understanding and skills when supported by relevant professionals. The importance of mentoring as a learning-teaching relationship was demonstrated. Conclusion: While the study has indicated that the setting is beneficial as a student placement, the development of a specialisation in CBR for allied health professionals would be a relevant way forward in the Malaysian context. The proposed system is more convenient than the traditional speech analyzing tools such as Electropalatograph, where the latter requires an external electronic circuit to be attached into the mouth of client. The system is designed in a way that is user friendly and easy to use for the speech-language pathologist or even the client. The client undergoes speech training by just talking into the microphone and the system is able to recognize the sounds and classify them accordingly. Audio and visual feedback is used to help the client to identify his or her articulation errors as well as to make comparisons between his/her articulation models with the standard model. The system can be used for both children and adults.

There are currently two local undergraduate programs graduating SLPs. An estimated half of the local graduates serve in general and university hospitals throughout the country. The remaining half typically work in traditional institution-based speechlanguage pathology settings in the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and in neighbouring countries, mainly in Singapore. A small portion of the present workforce is also made up of graduates from overseas institutions. In 2009, the Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia estimated a ratio of one SLP per 150,000 people in Malaysia. This fi gure suggests the need for innovations in service delivery beyond traditional models; that is, models typically used in high-income countries.
