Studies have shown that example-based learning is an easy-to-understand method for novice, while infographic display is an effective strategy to aid the learning processes. As a result, a module with four-step approach based on case study examples and infographic called 'ReSt' (Research and Statistics) was developed, mainly to assist novice users in analysing quantitative data using SPSS within the actual research context. The ADWa model (amalgamation of ADDIE and Waterfall Model) was incorporated as an instructional design model for the ReSt module. The four-step approach is an innovation that depicts the flow of research process. The example-based learning was integrated into ReSt module to facilitate users in relevant information-seeking processes and to help them to concentrate on studying the problem-solving steps provided. The display of infographic information allows difficult information to be processed in a simple form to enhance the learning process. In fact, the cognitive load theory is the main foundation of the ReSt module design. It is hoped that the ReSt module would be able to serve its purpose in guiding novice users to learn quantitative data analysis using SPSS by enhancing their skills.

One of the aims was to upgrade the English language proficiency of Malaysian students. Several problems and challenges have been encountered by implementers and educators since then. One of the problems is the use of the existing computer-based science materials. Apart from the obvious and great need for more science materials, new materials need to be designed to fulfill the needs of the science students who are not competent in the English language and also the needs of the science teachers who are also lacking in the knowledge of the English language. This study examined the perceptions of the science teachers in Malaysia concerning the use of computer-based materials provided by the Ministry of Education. The findings were presented in terms of the clarity and suitability of the content, English language used, presentation of content materials, and adequacy of materials and facilities. Based on the results, several suggestions are put forward so that a more systematic approach could be employed in designing better computerbased materials for the teachers and students.

This qualitative action research was implemented with 24 second-year undergraduates majoring in French as a foreign language in a Malaysian university. The pedagogical implementation included a task-based learning approach delivered according to personalized, meaningful and learner-controlled learning principles. In accordance with social constructivist theory, the implementation emphasized student-centered and controlled learning. Scaffolding choices involved instructor as well as peer and technological support in an immersive blended learning environment sustained with Facebook groups. The learners' engagement was investigated according to grounded theory's procedures. The learners' perceptions of classroom learning processes were triangulated with the instructors' reflections with a three-level coding applied to the constant comparative method of analysis. Findings supported the use of t-MALL as sustaining engagement in immersive learning environments. The learner-centered and controlled approach allowed just-in time triadic scaffolding which contributed to raising active participation throughout the tasks. The implementation of t-MALL enhanced the students' perceptions of the learning environment which unleashed their willingness-to-communicate in the target language. Reaching volition further contributed to enhancing the students' motivational factors of engagement towards acquisition and self-regulated learning. The discussion imparts recommendations and best practices towards efficient scaffolding for engaged language learning in immersive and participatory environments.

The development of the online Fun Learning Instrument known as English Primary Fun (EPFun) is based on the Piaget Constructivism Development theory. This theory could be applied to young learners as it includes cognitive, behaviourist and secondlanguage acquisition theory as well. The purpose of this study is to detect Differential Item Functioning (DIF) in performances between genders among Malaysian young learners in rural primary schools. The data were obtained from the randomly selected respondents of 106 male and 144 female young learners from the target group. The EPFun instrument consists of four constructs: a) Usefulness (USFN), b) Ease of Use (EOU), c) Ease of Learning (EOL) and d) Satisfaction (SAT). To analyse the responses to the instruments, 40 items overall were made up using 5 levels of coded smileys from the 4 constructs. The data were analysed using SPSS and Winsteps version 3.68.2, a Rasch-based item analysis programme. The findings indicate there is no significant difference in DIF performance between male and female young learners. This conclusion is derived from the t-test for Equality of Means, which revealed the results of the Sig. (2 tailed) for every construct (USFN; Sig = 0.558; EOU; Sig = 0.638; EOL; Sig = 0.628 and SAT; Sig = 0.500) larger than 0.5. The findings also revealed that there were only 7 items detected as DIF. However, there is no significant DIF based on the size range of the logits scales. Female young learners excel in one construct-Satisfaction (SAT). However, male young leaners are on a par with female young learners with regard to other constructs. Thus, this instrument is free from DIF and could be used as an indicator to gauge young learners' literacy skills, especially in using hypermedia reading materials in English.

The study involved 35 e-portfolios written by first-year students who enrolled on the Computers in Education course in the Faculty of Education, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. All the students taking this course were required to publish "reflections" based on their weekly learning activities via individual e-portfolios. Thematic analysis was done using Nvivo 10 software to categorize the content of the students' reflections. The analysis reveals that a large percentage of the "reflections" were non-reflective rather than reflective actions. This finding has implications for the way the course is designed, requiring a supportive environment, mentoring and group discussions, as reflective thinking is not spontaneous, but should be deliberately stimulated by the educational context.

A qualitative study was conducted to explore the role of personal factors in the application of information skills among university students in Malaysia. The study was conducted in a Malaysian public university and the participants were 31 lecturers, librarians and students who were involved in student information skills programs run by the university library. The study observed the programs and examined the programs' learning and teaching materials and interviewed the lecturers, librarians and students. The study found that personal learning orientations and goals influenced students' application of information skills across their university learning. The study suggested that in order to assist students to use information skills throughout their university learning, universities must help students to align their personal learning orientations toward university learning, as well as to help student to develop long term personal learning goals.

A total of 233 students of International Islamic University Malaysia, Gombak who have the experience in hybrid teaching and learning were involved as respondents. Rasch Measurement Model was used for this study. Validity analyses conducted were on (i) the compatibility of the items, (ii) mapping of items and respondents, (iii) scaling of instruments, and (iv) unidimentional items. The findings of the study show that (i) the items developed correspond with the construct they represent, (ii) items are evenly distributed on the mean of the respondents, (iii) the scale of instruments to be improved, and (iv) the instrument is multidimensional. Therefore, it shows that Hybrid e-Learning instrument has the items that measure the construct it represents as well as the compatibility with the capability of the respondents of the study.

This research is a qualitative action research which is situated within a longitudinal perspective with the aim of understanding the factors arising from the learning environment contributing to increase active engagement in the classroom. Malaysian undergraduates majoring in French as a foreign language are the sample to conduct this research as they faced motivational issues due to linguistic and cultural gap between their target and native languages. The t-MALL environment stimulated and sustained the students’ engagement and the analysis of video recordings revealed marked improvements in spontaneous participations. The encouraging results in terms of students’ engagement, coping strategies and proficiency achievements validated the fitness of t-MALL in enhancing the learning environment within the research context.
