The objective of this study was to assess the characteristics of air quality and predict PM10 concentrations using boosted regression trees (BRTs). The maximum daily PM10 concentration data from 2002 to 2016 were obtained from the air quality monitoring station in Kuching, Sarawak. Eighty percent of the monitoring records were used for the training and twenty percent for the validation of the models. The best iteration of the BRT model was performed by optimizing the prediction performance, while the BRT algorithm model was constructed from multiple regression models. The two main parameters that were used were the learning rate (lr) and tree complexity (tc), which were fixed at 0.01 and 5, respectively. Meanwhile, the number of trees (nt) was determined by using an independent test set (test), a 5-fold cross validation (CV) and out-of-bag (OOB) estimation. The algorithm model for the BRT produced by using the CV was ...

Highthroughput data for a given molecule can give rise to a series of inter-related and overlapping peaks in a mass spectrum. The spectrum suffers from high dimensionality data relative to small sample size. Several studies have proposed statistical and machine learning techniques such as Principle Component Analysis (PCA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and wavelet-coefficient in order to extract the potential features. However, none of these methods take into account the huge number of features relative to small sample size. This study focused on two stages of mass spectrometry analysis. Firstly, feature extraction methods extract peaks as potential features to infer biological meaning of the data. Shrinkage estimation of covariance was proposed to assemble m/z windows and identify the correlation coefficient among peaks of m...

The service helps organization to interact by using various programming languages and machine platform. Web service requirements are evolving according to requirements’ volatility introduced by business demands and computer technology. In developing E-learning web service, developer needs to cater challenges in business requirements as well as web service issue. E-Learning web service must be managed properly to cater changing requirements of syllabus and courses contents. Therefore, changing requirements can be identified in order to meet requirements corresponding to requirements’ priority. There is a challenge for developer to develop changing requirements in e-Learning Web service since business demands and technical needs always change. For that reason, volatile requirements should be prioritized by imposing prioritization method in order to allow developers execute more cri...

The process varies among students. Different subjects have different techniques in learning. This study will identify the suitability of learning styles focusing on programming subject for novice users. We choose the most established learning model, which is VARK Model to find the best approach on students’ learning styles. VARK stands for Visual (V), Aural (A), Read/Write (R), and Kinaesthetic (K). We concentrate on three learning styles, which are Visual, Auditory, and Kinaesthetic, and on how it influences student’s enthusiasm in learning programming. The results show that the students prefer active learning that involves face-to-face interaction in order to understand the programming course across the three mentioned learning styles. Hence, this creates significant challenge to apply blended learning method in this course

Learners need to be able to comprehend a program that is completed with syntax, semantic and program flow. Most learners especially the novices face a lot of problems when trying to learn a program. Many studies have been conducted to observe the process on how learners understand the program source code. Usually, the study of program comprehension focuses on the combination of two important characteristics: theories and tools. The theories that provide how to improve program comprehension and tools that can implement the theories. These two characteristics will change the way programmers understand the program codes. Many researchers review some of the key theories of program comprehension and discusses on how these theories are related to tools that support it. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the evolution of the three predominant approaches of program comprehension in the aspect of cognitive theory which are: bottom-up, top-down and the integrated approach. This study also considers the important of cognitive model to make the effective learning process. Therefore, this paper can provide the intuitive environment for the process of learning especially for novice learners.

Every level of educations sector is required to suddenly change into online and distance learning mode. Focusing to tertiary education level, this research was conducted to investigate the usefulness and effectiveness of WhatsApp as the most popular social media medium in community as teaching and learning medium for course computer programming language of C++. In order to measure the usefulness, WhatsApp features are evaluated to accomplish teaching and learning students' perception. Next, students' attitude towards learning process were evaluated as learning behavior. The result showed the WhatsApp was convenient for teaching and learning online when all features are fully utilized and improve positive attitudes toward self-learning.

Further, high throughput of proteomics pattern derived from mass spectrometry analysis has embarked new paradigm for biomarker analysis through accessible body fluids such as serum, saliva, and urine. Recently, sophisticated computational techniques that are mimetic natural survival and behaviour of organisms have been widely adopted in problem-solving algorithm. As we put emphasis on feature selection algorithm, the most challenging phase in biomarker analysis is selecting most parsimonious features of voluminous mass spectrometry data. Therefore this study reveals the hybrid artificial bee colony and differential evolution as feature selection techniques exhibits comparable results. These results were compared with other types of bio-inspired algorithms such as ant colony and particle swarm optimisation. The proposed method produced; 1) 100 percent and 98.44 of accuracy of the ovarian cancer dataset; and 2) 100 percent and 94.44 percent for TOX dataset for both training and testing respectively.

The uniqueness of this study relies on the ability of the proteomic patterns to detect particular disease especially at the early stage. However, identification through high-throughput mass spectrometry analysis raises some challenges. Typically, it suffers from high dimensionality of data with tens of thousands attributes and high level of redundancy and noises. Hence this study will focus on two stages of mass spectrometry pipelines; firstly we propose shrinkage estimation of covariance to evaluate the discriminant characteristics among peaks of mass spectrometry data for feature extraction; secondly a sophisticated computational technique that mimic survival and natural processing which is called as Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) as feature selection is integrated with linear SVM classifier for this biomarker discovery analysis. The proposed method is tested with real-world ovarian cancer dataset to evaluate the discrimination power, accuracy, sensitivity and also specificity.

Such sophisticated approaches provide efficient ways to mine voluminous mass spectrometry data in order to extract potential features by getting rid of redundant information. This feature extraction process ultimately aids in discovering disease-related protein patterns in complex mixtures that is easily obtained from biological fluids such as serum and urine. This article provides an overview of such typical bio-inspired approaches.

Silvaco TCAD tool is used to fabricate the AZO photoconductor sensor and to obtain the electrical characteristics of the device by using its simulation software. The device performance was investigated with various thicknesses of AZO film, annealing temperatures and different Al doping concentration. The Al doping was varied 1×1017 cm−3, 1×1019 cm−3 and 1×1021 cm−3, the thickness was varied 0.2 nm, 1.0 nm and 1.2 nm and the temperature was varied from 300°C, 500°C and 700°C. The electrical properties of AZO photodetector were characterized using current voltage (I-V) measurement system respectively. The result shows that by changing the thicknesses of aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO), and the doping concentration of aluminium in the zinc oxide have greatly improved the...

Programming languages are different from human communication languages as they have different structural forms. This makes it difficult for beginners especially for non-computer science students to understand the structure of programming languages. Therefore, to learn and understand the programming language more effectively, this article focuses on the important structure in learning a program from the initial stage to the advanced level suitable for non-computer science students. The objective of this article is to suggest important elements that can be assessed on these students which are to measure their understanding as they learn programming languages. The questions proposed to measure students' understanding were based on Bloom's Taxonomy, which covers six levels of understanding. It is hoped that this assessment proposal can act as a guideline for edu...
