It is generally believed that the denial of the Muslim identity in Bosnia-Herzegovina is a recent... more It is generally believed that the denial of the Muslim identity in Bosnia-Herzegovina is a recent phenomenon because it was not until the 1970s that the Muslims in former Yugoslavia were allowed to officially declare their Muslim identity. What this chapter will show is that there is a long and painful history of this denial, which is only reaching its climax in the present day within the European political context.

to become a global crisis. Benjamin Gregg’s proposal of a human
rights state aspires to justice, and justice in this context requires
the neutralising of the cynical misuse of religious freedom. In
Bosnia and Herzegovina, education appears to be the most
promising channel for facilitating a non-abusive approach to
religious freedom, a goal challenged by the sheer complexity of
everyday life in a multi-ethnic community riven by conflict, but
also by deeply problematic political solutions such as the Dayton
Agreement.
