The study involved the reconnaissance survey to ascertain the current capacity of the existing drainage in the flood disaster prone area of Isale Koko, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The dimension of the drainage network of the area was taken at eight (8) various points and the average area of the drainage was obtained to be 0.44m². The already existing drainage in the area was divided into 3 sections for easy computations of flow value, length, depth and width. The rainfall intensity for the study area was found to be 98.49mm/hr. The rational method and Manning’s equation were used for the surface runoff and the proposed drainage respectively. The peak flow of the area and maximum flow velocity in the drains were determined to be 48.46mᶟ/s and 2.21mᶟ/s respectively. The best hydraulic section method was employed to obtain new drainage dimensions for both rectangular and trapezoidal channels. The new designed rectan...

The main source of water supply were the boreholes. Samples were collected from 6 Boreholes and two different brands of sachet water (packaged drinking water) and were tested for the following; pH, total solids, turbidity, total suspended solids, electrical conductivity, hardness, chloride, nitrate, sulphate, BOD, COD, DO, Iron, Copper, Lead, E. coli and Total coliform. The results of the evaluations were compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) to establish its suitability for human consumption. Statistical tests were conducted to compare experimental results with standards. From the tests conducted, five samples; A, C, D, E and G have higher mean values for lead (Pb) more than prescribed limit of 0.05mg/l by WHO. Microbial in Sample B, C, D, E, F, and G were above the required standard of 0c...

This community based study was undertaken to identify the magnitude of the relationship between MP and key environmental factors in Okelele, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. A multi-staged sampling procedure was adopted for the selection of 501 children from 200 households. Children under the age of 14 years in the selected households were sampled to obtain baseline MP using malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test (mRDT) kit. Key household informant interviews and structured questionnaire were used. Relevant socio-demographic characteristics of the households, EF and non EF were determined. Acquired data was analyzed using statistical tools to determine the relationship between various independent variables and mRDT. Variables were also entered into a multiple regression eq...

COVID-19 pandemic has caused enormous amounts of hazardous wastes, which require special attention. The present study aimed to assess circular economy and waste management actions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

However currently, its consideration for malaria control is very little. A community based study was conducted for malaria prevalence in Okelele, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. A total of 200 households were studied which comprise of 501 children, age ≥ 14 years, 241 females, and 260 males. Data was recorded on the study profoma and entered into the computer using statistical software package. The results indicated that 29.9% were found to be positive with use of RDT, open drainage, stagnation of water in drain, solid waste in drain and presence of weed were found to be significant factors to malaria increase at p-value < 0.05. Integrated Solid Wastes Management (ISWM) and community cooperation are being proposed in this study.

A study carried out to test the knowledge of patients and staffs of a tertiary health center in Nigeria on medical waste management using a random sampling of 200 patients and hospit revealed that 131 out of the 200 sample population believe that all waste generated within the health center are dangerous to health but only 96 of this same population knows that they have a responsibility to take part in t A survey of the support staffs shows that 47% have had a needle stick injury while handling medical waste while only 64% of this same population has been vaccinated against Hepatitis B. These suggest that knowledge on med inadequate. There is urgent need for waste managers and other stake holders to create avenues that will increase the knowledge on medical waste management.
