The three main objectives were: first, to rethink current practices in museum education in an effort to reach a dialectical synthesis between art-making and educational activities; second, to Jurther develop three key identities held within a/rltography; and third, to develop visual research instruments in a!rltographic final reports. An exhibition-installation was organized around seven engravings, two photographs and one sculpture including the artworks by L. Bourgeois, E. Chillida, E. Munch, P Picasso, A. Tapies, among others, in the Spanish Caja-Granada Memory of Andalusia Museum. The main educational goal was to engage visitors with leaming to interact visually with original artwork befare producing new images that would then immediately became part of the installation.

The first is methodological: How can film editing narrative structures be used to organize arguments and demonstrations in visual a/r/tography reports? The second is thematic: What analogies can be drawn between three different symbolic spaces such as classrooms, museums and films? The semantic interactions between visual images on education, painting and movies provoke new ways of interpreting the roles of academic learning (students versus teachers) and aesthetic consumption (spectators versus artists). Narrative structures in visual a/r/tography need to develop specific uses, differentiated from other narrative uses in mass media and visual arts, to fulfill the functions of academic research. How then should new problems about learning be described visually? How are innovative educational theories proven using visual a/r/tography research techniques?

group of visual images about education (or any other social science). This relatively
recent research methodology essentially produces new visual images about educational
questions. Like any other research methodology, visual a/r/tography assumes (a) certain
basic epistemological positions, (b) distinctive methodological strategies, and (c) specific
quality criteria. We suggest five different paths to identify assessment criteria, the
most important of these residing in the development of a framework of correspondences
between quality criteria usually applied to research reports based on words (sentences,
paragraphs, verbal thinking) and those based on visual images (photos, photo essays,
visual thinking).

The visual and conceptual relationships established between the pictures themselves in a research report are decisive for scientific and artistic quality. We recommend the use of concepts such as ‘photo series’, ‘photo essay’, ‘photographic discourse’, ‘photo abstract’, ‘photo conclusion’ and ‘photographic quotation’. Each concept fulfils a different function and value as a specific research criterion. The article offers definitions of some of these concepts and shows photographic portraits made by students in the primary teacher education department at the University of Granada, drawing on the work of Lewis Hine.
