Their subject matter involves common people, and it engages with three crucial discursive formations: violence, socioeconomic inequality, and utopian dreams. These three artists contribute to creating a 'history from below' whose focus is Chinese ordinary people.

Today we still use the term ‘street markets’ to refer to outdoor spaces that are made up of a set of implicit and explicit traditions and cultural practices, but these are also spaces of sociality and connection (Watson 2009; Watson and Studdert 2006). Although street markets are primarily studied as sites for the exchange of economic goods and tradable products, they play a crucial role in the policies of urban regeneration, tangible and intangible heritage, placemaking, healthy eating, social sustainability, environmental impact, social and community cohesion, and economic innovation (Shepherd 2009; Stillerman 2006; Watson and Wells 2005). Based on the premise that street hawking and street markets are part of a wider socioeconomic and political system, this essay concentrates on the transition from street hawkers to public markets in Hong Kong, and analyses this historical transformation and their consequences within the framework of Hong Kong Government’s strategy to create a modern and sanitized city.

In retaliation for their attacks on foreigners in the northern provinces, and Beijing in particular, a massive foreign army, known as the Eight-Power Allied Expeditionary Force, invaded. The fighters of the `Righteous Harmony Society (Yihe Tuan ???), as the Boxers were generally known in Chinese (although the court originally called them `Boxing Bandits, or quanfei ??), were finally defeated on 14 August 1900 as 20,000 foreign troops entered the imperial capital of Beijing. With the signing of the Final Protocol that brought the conflict to an end on 7 September 1901, Italy received 5.91% of the Boxer Indemnity paid by China to the foreign powers, extraterritorial privileges and the concession of a small area of 447,647 square metres on the northern bank of the Haihe River ?? in the nearby city of Tianji

This event took place three hundred years after his death, in his native town, Macerata.1 On that occasion, two of the invited speakers, Mr. E. A. Perogio and Mr. L. Sborlino, chose as the focus of their speeches “Italians and Governance in China” and “The Italian Concession in Tientsin,” respectively. At this juncture, nearly 50 years had passed since the complex and problematic creation of the newly unified Italian state, while, significantly, only nine years had elapsed since the official acquisition from the Qing government of the territory destined to become the Yizujie (Italian Concession), known today as Yishi fengqingqu (Italian-style scenic neighborhood). The cession of this small plot of land was the outcome of the Italian military participation in the Eight-Power Allied E...

China, the world’s most populous nation, is no exception. The necessity for cost-effective, culture-appropriate and sustainable eldercare services is one of the Government’s priorities, in both present and future. This research uses a focus-group interviews methodology to explore sustainable models of eldercare services through an in-depth comparative analysis of care demands and service provision in two Chinese cities. The study reflects a prevailing trend of the integrated-care service mix in line with the United Nations’ five most relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 3, 5, 10, 11) for older adults. In addition to the 7Ps of the service marketing mix, this article highlights the particular importance of ‘Partnership’ in sustainable care delivery in China. The past-present-future scenario and the thematic analysis of older adu...

The analysis of the specific forms of power embodied in the properties and functions of language practices and discursive formations illuminates various possibilities for normalization and inculcation of formalized language in the understudied decade of the 1990s, when the mantra ‘Without stability, nothing can be achieved’ became a tautology. The internal constitution of the selected texts is examined with an eye to the dialogic interaction with the production and reception of Mao Zedong’s and Deng Xiaoping’s political discourses on intellectuals. The analysis of language practices and discursive formations in a comparative perspec...

Although street markets are primarily studied as sites for the exchange of economic goods and tradable products, they play a crucial role in the policies of urban regeneration, heritage, place making, healthy eating, sustainability, environmental impact, social and community. Based on the premise that street hawking and street markets are historically part of a wider socio-economic, political, and cultural system, this paper will concentrate on the stories of survival, resistance and metamorphosis of the ‘vital living past’ of Graham Street Market. This 150 years old market, remarkable example of ‘living heritage’, is currently under threat due to neo-liberal logic of redevelopment and gentrification. The paper analyzes the role of concerned civil society organisations (such as ‘Savethemarket’) in the battle against domicide: the destruc...

This essay analyses the market's historical function and the actions of concerned civil society organisations visa -vis government authorities and urban developers in the battle to 'save the market'. It argues that the Graham Street Market is both a laboratory for normative urban governmentality and a testing ground for grassroots practices of collective identity and sustainability.

The first part of this book puts Chinese urban changes into historical perspective, and probes the relationship between nation and city, focusing on Shanghai, Beijing and Changchun. Part two deals with the relationship between history and modernity, concentrating on Tunxi, a traditional trade center of tea, New Villages in Shanghai and street names in Taipei and Shanghai. Part three showcases the complexities of urban regeneration vis-à-vis heritage preservation in cities such as Datong, Tianjin and Qingdao.
This book offers an innovative interdisciplinary and international perspective, which will be of interest to students and scholars of Chinese urban studies, as well Chinese politics and society.
