Designing Politics: The limits of design, 2016
What are the limits of design in addressing the political and/or when has design not been enough?... more What are the limits of design in addressing the political and/or when has design not been enough? This question lies at the heart of Designing Politics, an ongoing project at Theatrum Mundi. After three years of organising ideas challenges in cities around the world, Theatrum Mundi gathered a group of architects, academics, artists and activists in May 2016 to reflect on the questions it asks, and the fundamental relationship between design and politics. This collection of thought pieces stems from a workshop in May 2016 at the Villa Vassilieff in Paris, supported by the Global Cities Chair at the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris.

Voi[e,x,s] signifies rail tracks (French: voies) and voices (French: voix). It combines recordings of this space, its industrial materials and its unique acoustic conditions with the recorded voices of local inhabitants speaking their names, in dialogue with live performers, to create a sound installation and performance event that will animate the new park and open
it to its community. The project is marked by three performances, two of which took place in June 2018 in the temporary Parc des 12 Saisons created on the edge of the site by Collectif Chapelle Charbon as part of the public engagement preceding the transformation. The final performance will be in the new park when it is complete.

The Museum of London is making plans to leave its purpose-built modernist structure at London Wall and renovate part of the old Smithfield Market as a new facility. As it does so, it has the opportunity to transform its relationship to the city spatially, socially, and culturally.
Theatrum Mundi worked together with Museum of London to stimulate a critical debate about the implications of translating a museum of the city from a singular, purpose- built architecture to a plural, pre-existing fabric: in other words, what it means to urbanise the museum.
