I am Professor Emeritus of sociology at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. For over forty years I've done research on sports, culture, and society with special attention given to the play, games, and sport participation of young people. I am an internationally respected scholar, author, and journal editor and have received many professional awards. One of my books, Sports in Society: Issues and Controversies (12th edition), is used in universities worldwide. In "retirement," I remain focused on making sport participation a source of enjoyment and development for young people, and making sports more democratic and humane for people of all ages.

Sport mega-events (SMEs) involve struggles to determine the definition of legacy and the outcome ... more Sport mega-events (SMEs) involve struggles to determine the definition of legacy and the outcome priorities that guide legacy planning, funding, and implementation processes. History shows that legacies reflect the interests of capital, and legacy benefits are enjoyed primarily, if not exclusively, by powerful business interests, a few political leaders, and organizations that govern high performance sports. This paper addresses challenges faced by cities and countries that host SMEs, and shows that fair and equitable legacies and developmental outcomes are achieved only when the voices and interests of the general population are taken into account and given priority during the process of planning, funding and implementation. It also explains how full representation in the process of defining and achieving legacies and developmental outcomes may be undermined by populist beliefs about the power of sport.

As we move toward the next century the very rdea of "science" is being challenged, "scientific truth claims" are being questioned, and scientists themselves are being asked to critically examine how knowledge is produced and used. The notion that science is the primary source of enlightenment, empowerment, and progress in society is being scrutinized and contestedr This critique of science has been expressed in various ways. In some cases it takes the form of cynicism and concludes that modern science is a myth, that all scientific truth claims are empty and baseless, that knowledge itself is a contradiction, and that so-called scientific expertise has been more often used to oppress and marginalize human beings than to achieve meaningful human emancipation. In other cases the critique takes the form of skepticism and concludes there is a need to recognize that science does not have a monopoly on truth, that all knowledge is ideological, that scientific expertise will never lead to a world free of domination, and that science lacking a "praxis orientation" (i. e., focused on political action,
