Brunei is a small endowed country in South East Asia which is marked by its Islamic emblem, actively pursuing the nations's goal of becoming a world class Islamic nation if not a world class nation in this 21 st Century, God willing. This paper will describe its long time struggle to establish a language and education policy which fulfils its national goal and agenda in line with what a successful modern Islamic state should be. Brunei's language and education policy is unique in that it has at its foundation, the will to be independently designed and suitable with the aspiration and pace of its loyal people. Its language and education policy is based on its long unique history and the country's philosophy of Melayu, Islam Beraja. This philosophy, as it progresses with time can be described to be on the way towards compliance with universally accepted philosophy of education as well as the laws of the Quran. The author argues that the language in Brunei's education policy is in tandem with the symbol of language as a goodly tree, as specified in the Quran. In practice this can be termed as the Brunei Language Identity Tree, coined by the author.

Abstrak Puisi Intan ialah nama yang penulis berikan kepada satu genre yang semakin popular di lelaman maya yang dikenali sebagai " diamante " atau " diamond poems ". Nama 'intan' atau 'berlian' ini dikatakan tercetus dari bentuk akhir puisi ini yang menyerupai bentuk permata yang bergemerlapan. Penulisan Puisi Intan ini mula diperkenalkan oleh pengkaji ke dalam dunia pendidikan bahasa Melayu kepada guru-guru pelatih program Diploma dan kemudian kepada para peserta Program Sarjana Pendidikan (PDCM). Ia telah mendapat sambutan yang amat menggalakkan. Kemudian guru-guru tersebut telah mengajarkannya pula kepada murid-murid mereka sendiri semasa latihan mengajar masing-masing, di sekolah rendah dan menengah di Singapura. Makalah ini akan membicarakan proses pengajaran puisi intan ini kepada guru-guru pelatih tersebut. Di samping itu satu kajian kualitatif untuk menerapkan puisi intan dalam pengajaran bahasa Melayu dan pengajaran sastera klasik dikemukakan. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa puisi intan mempunyai potensi besar sebagai satu genre yang boleh diperkenalkan ke dalam kurikulum pengajaran bahasa dan juga sastera Melayu sama ada di peringkat sekolah rendah mahupun sekolah menengah. Kata Kunci: puisi intan, pengajaran, sastera, kualitatif, bahasa Melayu.
