Through a close reading of an extensive correspondence kept by Romanian deputy in the Budapest Parliament and his spouse during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the paper offers a glimpse into the domesticity and affection present in the relationship that might have been regarded as a mere pragmatic choice, owing to the fact that it considerably advanced the Romanian politician's career. On the other hand, it looks at how the kinship network established through marriage strengthened and grew even after the politician lost the main link to his in-laws, their daughter. It offers several conclusions that serve to emphasize the need for more in-depth qualitative studies of how kinship and politics intertwined, to the benefit of both fields.

It argues that this office and the corps of officials holding it should be examined more closely in order to be able to better understand the shifts in the Hungarian state's welfare programs during the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries. The paper explores several key issues related to the presidents of the orphan courts in Transylvania between 1876 and 1914: firstly, the professional attributions held by this office; secondly, the importance of the office as reflected by the income and level of public influence it generated; thirdly, it sketches out a group analysis of those individuals who occupied this position during Dualism in Transylvanian counties.

The Romanians’ national desideratum had been accomplished by the end of the year 1918, but the process of the new territories’ social, economic and political integration within the Kingdom of Romania had barely just begun. Regionalism was to become one of the obstacles that would prove difficult to overcome on the pathway towards the completion of the integration process. As regards the political component of this integration, the multi-confessional and multiethnic character of the Banat, coupled with the tradition of activism in the area and the vast electoral experience of the population here, led this province to become a stronghold of regionalism. As the representatives of regional interests, the members of the Banatian political elite were to distinguish themselves a...

The purpose was to approach the internal political context surrounding the 1884 elections, the origins of the two political directions in the county of Arad in this period, the kinship relations of the major political figures, as well as their involvement in the campaign and the elections themselves. We tried to achieve a detailed image of the political opinions, electoral strategies and the particular and group interests that dominated the political class in Arad in the last decades of the 19th century.

Geographically, the area which we will refer to as 'Eastern Hungary' comprised four counties on the left bank of the Tisa/Tisza River (Bihar, Máramaros, Szatmár and Szilágy) and the two counties of the Tisa-Mureş bend (Arad, Csanád), occupying 39,155 square kilometres in all. Among them stood two of the largest counties of Hungary by surface area-Bihar (the third largest county) and Máramaros (the fourth). 1 Going back no further than the Austrian conquest of 1684, the counties of Máramaros, Arad, Közép-Szolnok and Kraszna, the district of Kővár and the town of Debrecen were under Transylvanian administration. Between 1709 and 1732, several administrative solutions were sought, among them a form of condominium (those territories belonged fiscally to the Transylvanian Gubernium and were politically under Hungarian tutelage). The dispute was finally resolved in 1732 when Emperor Charles VI ordered that Arad, Máramaros and a part of Zaránd should be incorporated into Hungary. The district of Kővár and the counties of Zaránd, Kraszna and Közép-Szolnok (the so-called Partium) remained in the Principality of Transylvania up until the imperial decision of 27 th December 1860, when the region passed under Hungarian administration together with the town of Zalău/Zilah and the Banat (Temes, Torontál and Krassó Counties). Henceforth, the electorate in these administrative units sent deputies to the Parliament convened in

The present study focuses on the educational and professional pathway of Alexa David, one of the law graduates hailing from the land of Năsăud/Naszód, in the final decade of the nineteenth and the first part of the twentieth century. David's experiences exemplify one of the area's nation-building strategies aimed at establishing a body of individuals trained in law, who could defend the interests of the Romanian nation in Hungarian courts, and contribute to its betterment in all domains. At the same time, because of his kinship ties to the uppermost political echelon in Dualist Hungary, through his uncle Ion Ciocan, a parliamentary representative in Budapest, the Romanian man of law saw himself in a privileged financial position, and was introduced into a wide-ranging network spanning many counties and social-professional levels. He made use of this network in his personal efforts of advancement, and then gave back when he had managed to establish himself as part of the administrative system of the Hungarian, and later on, Romanian state.

These are the only Romanian election newssheets prior to the year 1918 that were preserved from Transylvania and Banat, being little known and referred to in historiography. the study presents the publications’ content, their role within the moment’s electoral campaign and the relationship between the information they offer and the one provided by other sources from the same period. The conclusions emphasise the important role played by these newssheets in understanding the electoral process at the beginning of the 20th century, but also their obvious limitations and especially the caution with which one must use the information they offer, as it is clearly influenced by their’ propagandistic and mobilising character.

Over time, the establishment of a legal elite-graduates of law academies and faculties-assumed an increasingly important role, especially for national minorities. The present paper attempts to tally the results of the collective endeavour on the part of the Romanians in Dualist Hungary to forge this elite segment by focusing on the swansong moment of Romanian petitioning, the Memorandum trial of 1894. It examines the impromptu selection of local members of the Romanian legal elite in Hungary, occasioned by the need to defend the leadership of the Romanian national movement in the courtroom, and discusses their educational and professional backgrounds. It also shines a light on the contrary positions taken by other members of the national leadership-also a segment of this legal elite-and the ensuing confl icts between and among the national leadership as both groups tried in their own way to defend the Romanian national movement.
