While I may have had the ability to prosper at the doctoral level, without their support and encouragement, attaining my doctorate would have remained a vision and not become a reality. Christine, a.k.a. "Krissi", my wife and backbone of my family. KC Pie, you really put some work in this time. While I may have had the innate ability to pursue this dream, without your support and encouragement it would have remained just that: a dream. Your instinct to shoulder the burden of my familial responsibilities throughout my doctoral program was not a new concept to you as you did it throughout my Marine Corps career. Words cannot express how thankful I am. The only thing I can say at this point is: just give me five more years. I LOVE YOU! Nathan, a.k.a. "Nater" or "Nate Dawg", my eldest son. As much as you hate to acknowledge this, you are following in my footsteps. Don't fight it; just accept it and do better, vato. Thanks for allowing me to use my garage, bringing me coconut water, and providing me with continued words of encouragement that included, "Dad, are you done yet?" I love you, Nater. Semper Fi! Dylan, a.k.a. "Tron" to his friends but "Buggy" to me, my middle son. I swear, boy, your adventurous spirit-and I say this lightly-and love for life will drive me to an early grave. Whenever I doubted myself, I used your will to fight as motivation to continue going forward. While I may have overcome adversity, I could never compare myself to the adversity you have overcome. Buggy, you are a true inspiration and, if allowed, would have made a hell of a Marine. I love you, Buggy! v Samantha, a.k.a. "Sammy", my daughter. It doesn't matter how old you are; you will always be my little girl. Watching you blossom into the woman you are, which coincidently is a spitting image of your mother along with her attitude, and knowing you will follow in my footsteps with regard to pursuing your doctorate fills my heart with joy. You're my favorite daughter, baby girl, or as you like to point out, "I'm your only daughter, Dad". I guess since you're going to pursue a doctorate in the future, you don't have to join the Marines. I love you, Sammy. Irene and Salvador, my parents, who migrated to the U.S. in the late 1960s. Padre y Madre, Los Amos. Chava, my little brother. Bro, thanks for the continued support and words of encouragement like telling me to get my ass to our parent's house for Sunday BBQs and take a break from the stressors of life. I truly appreciate you taking time to listen to my ranting and raving and providing me with disparate perspectives. While you may be younger, in many respects, you are much wiser. I love you, bro. Angel, the youngest brother I have. Believe it or not, you too provided me with support and encouragement. Your continued antics always put a smile on my face, which allowed me to decompress when I needed it most. In many respects, you stepped in when I was absent and provided my kids with a form of mentorship which I am truly grateful for. I love you, bro. vi Dr. Becky Summers and Dr. Heidi Vazquez, academic peers and confidants. Ladies, thank you for the words of encouragement, support, in-depth dialogue and continuingly checking up on me. The continued cohort mentorship you provided allowed me to adapt into my academic setting, overcome the dynamics of our cohort and continue going forward during the dissertation phase. Brandman MEChA. Ladies, thank you for coming into my life and making me laugh. Watching you persevere motivated me in more than one way, but it also supported the literature review of my study; Latinas are more likely to attain a doctorate than males. Hopefully future cohorts will have more Mexican males among their ranks and won't wait till the end of the coursework to become friends. Dr. Jeneane Prince, my dissertation chair. Thank you for taking on the challenges of becoming my dissertation chair. The guidance, direction, and "asschewings" made OUR end product (dissertation) much better. Without your mentorship, I wouldn't have been successful at this level. Dr. Philip Pendley, member of my dissertation committee. Thank you for the guidance and quick feedback. Someday I hope to mirror your style with regard to mentoring doctoral candidates. Dr. Maria C. Ayon, member of my dissertation committee. Thank you for the feedback and suggestions. To the participants of the study. Thank you for agreeing to participate in my study. Because of you, I was able to take your experiences and draw conclusions which added to the dearth of literature with regards to second-generation Mexican American vii males in pursuit of a doctorate. Because of you, I am now part of the elite group of Mexican American scholars. viii ABSTRACT A Qualitative Study of Factors Promoting Doctoral Attainment of Second-generation Mexican American Males from California. by Jorge Chavarin Research on second-generation Mexican American males who attain a doctoral degree is limited. Often, the data presented clusters Mexican Americans under the Latina/o or Hispanic ethnic group, focuses on factors that hindered educational attainment or details Latino male experiences in context of their Latina female counterparts. Mexican-Americans are the largest subgroup of this ethnic group yet little is known about their post-secondary educational experiences. Rather than focusing on barriers, this study concentrated on the factors that influenced eight Mexican American males from California who attained their doctorates from a doctoral-granting university within California. Arguably, the self-efficacious men of this study believed in their academic prowess, but found ability was not enough. Numerous other strategies were needed to help facilitate degree attainment: 1) Being goal-oriented served as the central cause to remain relentless; 2) Interaction with various types of mentorship which came from all aspects of life (academic, home, work); 3) Involvement from a culturally aligned dissertation chair; 4) Surrounding oneself with an inner circle of family and friends and academic peers; and 5) Viewing student loans as an investment that facilitated future aspirations and not as an obstacle. These factors didn't clash against one another; rather, they complemented each other by providing different types of encouragement, support and direction at different times throughout their ascent. However, having a culturally ix aligned dissertation chair was viewed as the most critical factor toward degree attainment.

The synthetic tetrapyrrole macrocycles, such as porphyrins (H 2 P) and phthalocyanines (H 2 Pc), ... more The synthetic tetrapyrrole macrocycles, such as porphyrins (H 2 P) and phthalocyanines (H 2 Pc), exhibit interesting physicochemical properties suitable to be used in modern technology. For many applications, those species should be trapped or fixed inside graphite, hydrotalcites, silica, TiO 2 , or polymers. Methodologies for the optimization of the properties of porphyrins, trapped or fixed inside polymers, have been barely developed. Our research works in the development of methodologies for the optimization of incorporation and display of properties of tetrapyrrole macrocycles inside inorganic, polymeric, or hybrid networks. This paper shows some results about the effect of the spatial disposition of the amine (-NH 2) groups attached on the periphery of substituted tetraphenylporphyrins, on the Nylon 66 structure and on the display of the physicochemical properties of the trapped macrocycles. Nylon 66 was synthesized from adipoyl chloride and hexamethylenediamine in presence of tetraphenylporphyrins substituted with-NH 2 groups localized at the ortho-or para-positions of the phenyls. Cobalt complexes formation was used to quantify the amount of porphyrins in the polymer fibers. Characterization results show that the spatial position of amine groups of the porphyrins has important structural and textural effect on the Nylon 66 fibers and on the fluorescence of the porphyrins integrated into the fibers.

Evidence of metal-organic coordination between Fe and Chrysin in a green anticorrosion film This work shows interesting results for a metal-organic complex as a green corrosion inhibitor. The study describes features of two passive films (PF) containing Chrysin for mild steel in H 2 SO 4 by means of electrochemical noise under a potentiostaic regime as a function of time. The features showed a current reduction due to formation of a passive film with better stability and homogeneity when chrysin is absorbed at optimal experimental potential. PF formed at 50 ppm presented a very high corrosion protection over seven hours reducing the current density seven orders of magnitude, and PF formed at 300 ppm showed two orders of magnitude decrease over 23 hours. PF analysis by FT-IR spectra showed important stretch band shift vibrations in the carbonyl and hydroxyl groups as evidence of the presence of metal-organic complex. Moreover, the information provided by adsorption isotherms and quantum chemical calculations confirmed the coordinated bonds established by chemisorption process which correlates with the experimental results.

The Inhibition Efficiency (IE) was obtained from Potentiodynamic Polarization Curves (PPC) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Corrosion rate, inhibition efficiency, and adsorption isotherms were obtained for the better green inhibitor. The C. longa methanol green inhibitor reached 93.68% of IE obtained by EIS and reduced in two orders of magnitude corrosion rate. It acts as mixed-type inhibitor. It was concluded that C. longa has a potential of application as green corrosion inhibitor for steel in media chloride.

These beams are exposed to moistened and drying cycles with 3.5 % sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and sodium chloride (NaCl). The purpose was settle an alternative in the evaluation of the reinforced concrete structures, using the electrochemical noise technique that is not perturvative to the system in study, and it provides more information than Polarization Resistance technique that is the only that at the moment is applied in the evaluation of reinforced concrete structures using commercial instruments. The evaluation was affected in beams of 20 x 20x 80 cm., reinforced with bars of 3/8 and stirrups of ¼" to each 20 cm, which were divided in four areas of 20 cm each one, having two protected areas and two naked areas, this with the purpose of having very defined the susceptible areas to suffe...

Design/methodology/approach The slow strain rate testing technique, hydrogen permeation tests and potentiodynamic polarization curves have been used. Findings Addition of the inhibitor below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) decreased the corrosion current density (icorr), but not enough to avoid embrittlement due to the entry of hydrogen into the steel. Instead, the addition of the inhibitor close to the CMC decreased the icorr, suppressed the entry of hydrogen and inhibited the sulfide stress cracking of steel. Finally, the addition of inhibitor above the CMC led to a slight increase of icorr and promoted localized corrosion, however, the sulfide stress cracking of steel was inhibited. Originality/value A green sulfide stress corrosion cracking inhibitor of a supermartensitic stainless steel...

Variations in surface roughness of different machining procedures from a typical metallic casting comparator are obtained from scattering intensity of a laser beam and expressed as changes in the statistics of speckle patterns and profiles optical properties. The application of the analysis (RQA) by Recurrence Plots (RPs), allowed to distinguish between machining procedures, highlighting features that other methods are unable to detect.

The anti-corrosion behavior of expired Fluconazole (2-(2,4-Difluorophenyl)-1,3-di(1H-1,2,4triazol... more The anti-corrosion behavior of expired Fluconazole (2-(2,4-Difluorophenyl)-1,3-di(1H-1,2,4triazol-1-yl)-2-propanol) as an inhibitor on mild steel was studied in a neutral chloride/sulphate solution, at room temperature using electrochemical techniques including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. Fluconazole characterization was performed using FTIR. Polarization curves showed that both corrosion and film formed pseudo-passivation current density values were lowered by almost one order of magnitude and therefore fluconazole acts as an anodic type of inhibitor on the steel surface. Impedance measurements confirmed the decrease in the corrosion rate by almost an order of magnitude, as a function of inhibitor concentration. The electrochemical results showed that this compound has a corrosion inhibitor effect and the best results were achieved with 150 ppm of Fluconazole, remaining around 80% efficiency up to 160 hours of immersion.
