Cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain (CBTp) is a non-pharmacological treatment method which has been shown to reduce a sufferer's experience of chronic pain and improve overall QOL. These and other studies also indicate that affective symptoms likely impact the effectiveness of CBTp. The current study focused on the effects of depressive symptoms on changes in QOL ratings across a 12-session CBT for chronic pain. Participants in this study (n = 313; mean age = 46.83 years, SD = 10.99, range = 19.1-79.9, 63.9% female, 83.9% Caucasian) were current patients of a mid-sized tertiary multidisciplinary outpatient chronic pain treatment facility. Progress through CBTp was assessed using QOL as a dependent variable and analyzed using RMANOVAs. All participants showed improvements in QOL ratings across the CB...

However, what makes PASS effective remains unknown; for example, PASS could improve short-term retention but hinder long-term maintenance of course content given that some methods that facilitate shortterm retention of information hurt long-term retention. Of additional interest was what predicts students' attendance in PASS. We tracked 75 introductory psychology students' short-and long-term retention of course content via unit quizzes and a cumulative final exam, respectively, to determine if PASS attendance improved both types of retention. Results indicated that PASS attendees had significantly higher academic self-efficacy and final grades than non-attendees. Attendees outperformed non-attendees on three of the six quizzes and on the cumulative final exam, supporting both the short-and long-term effectiveness of PASS.

The participants consisted of 366 male inmates incarcerated in a medium-security prison in the southern United States. Eleven personality styles, as measured by the Millon Multiaxial Clinical Inventory-III (T. Millon, 1994), were used to predict the 4 factors of gender role conflict as measured by the Gender Role Conflict Scale (J. M. O'Neil, B. Helms, R. Gable, L. David, & L. Wrightsman, 1986). The results indicate that the aggressive, histrionic, narcissistic, and dependent personality style predicted specific gender role conflict factors. The implications for the effect of personality on gender role conflict are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

R... more Psychological reactance is a construct that has potential wide ranging counseling implications. Recently, researchers have argued that reactance is characterological in nature and have attempted to delineate its nomological network. This study extends the nomological network of psychological reactance using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Therapeutic Reactance Scale (TRS). Personality type was found to be related to psychological reactance as measured by the TRS. The relationship between the TRS and MBTI, while significant, is complicated by a significant three-way interaction between Extraversion-Introversion, Intuition-Sensing and Thinking-Feeling. More specifically, thinkers consistently reported higher levels of psychological reactance than did Feelers, and intuitive-thinkers tended to report higher levels of psychological reactance than did sensing-thinkers.

H1: both reduce patient subjective pain ratings. H2: sufentanil is more effective than fentanyl. H3: overall satisfaction with pain control is greater with sufentanil. Materials/Method: This is an archival study of patients in tertiary pain management (N= 97, mean age = 58.77, standard deviation = 14.88). Pain was measured using the subjective units of discomfort scale. Satisfaction with pain control/relief was measured by asking patients each visit if they are satisfied with pain management and is recorded in a "yes"/ "no" manner. Pain ratings were analyzed with repeated measures analysis of variance and satisfaction was analyzed with chi square. Results/Discussion: Sufentanil was found to be marginally more effective, but both medications controlled a significant degree of variance in pain reduction over time. A significantly greater number of patients maintained on sufentanil...
