With the several interventions of Nigeria in West Africa, Nigeria remains an important regional player in the sub-region, thereby justifying the opportunities the country benefits from, in the course of its hegemonic adventures. The Classical Realism theory was adapted to the study in order to situate the role of national interests in the spectrum of inter-state relations. Data were gathered from existing literature, while analysis was done using textual methods. There is a strong belief that Francophone West African countries are tied to the apron-strings of their colonial masters, making it difficult for them to completely detach from such foreign influence and which Nigeria finds difficult to break in its quest to gain more influence in the region. The exacerbation of the crisis is traceable to government's complicity exemplified by its standing order to the United Nations to stay off and evacuate its monitors in what it considered an entirely Sudanese affair that could be resolved without external interference. However, considering the limits of state sovereignty in a modern international system, where membership of the UN, the existence of the Geneva Convention on the Laws of War, Humanitarian Law and other subsisting legal frameworks on war crimes erode absolute sovereignty, the Sudanese government cannot hide under the non-interference in the internal affairs of states clause to prevent the international community from intervention in Darfur. This probably explains the recent approval by the Government of Sudan to finally allow a joint UN-AU troops to restore security, bowing to intense international pressure to do so.

This study aims at assessing the impact on the measures put in place by the international oil corporations (IOCs) on women livelihood in Ogulagha Island of Delta State, Nigeria. This paper reveals that the mitigation measures (skill acquisition, financial support, employment opportunities, provision of social amenities, regular clean up and provision adequate health facilities) put in place by IOCs have no significant impact on women livelihood in Ogulagha Island, Delta State of Nigeria. This paper recommends that more research that is context specific with one on one interviews need to be conducted to actually know which measures can enhance the women livelihood in Ogulagha Island of Delta State, Nigeria.

However, any type of plagiarism is unacceptable and is considered unethical publishing behavior. Such manuscripts will be rejected.
Policing and Human Rights in Nigeria , 2022

In various societies in the contemporary international system police brutality, aggressive profiling, amongst other human rights violations have been a trending issue in modern times and this work attempts to analyse this topic using modern Nigeria as the case study. About protesting against police brutality, diverse movements such as the Black Lives Matter Movement in the United States and the End SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) movement in Nigeria have received significant attention in the global arena. This study purposes to examine the End SARS movement in particular; analysing the background of the movement and how the movement gained public attention in the international arena and the historical analysis of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad Division of the Nigerian Police Force. The study examines the extent of brutality, corruption and vain disregard for human rights by the Nigeria Police Force and SARS in particular. The Nigerian youths’ make up 53.57% of the population and research has shown that they are the major victims of police brutality in the country (Statista, 2020). This is an outright violation of their human rights and breach of SDG Goal 16; Peace, Justice and Strong Institution. After several years of innumerable experiences of police brutality especially from the SARS, the Nigerian youths organise the protests using diverse forms of new media especially social media to attract publicity to the issue. This paper attempts to examine the evolution of this development. It will primarily employ the use of secondary sources of data; library materials, online materials, etc. on the topic to further examine the discourse. Furthermore, the study is lunged on social theory.

The potency along the communication lines of Twitter lies in its ability to reach a wide and diversified audience quickly and simultaneously. Most intriguing is that individuals through public opinion on Twitter hold governments accountable for their actions. With the application of libertarian theory, the prohibition of Twitter in Nigeria is investigated empirically in this study. Drawing on secondary sources of data collection, the findings of the study revealed that regardless of the enormous prospects and economic relevance of Twitter in Nigeria, the Twitter ban is an undemocratic act and an utter infringement on freedom of expression and access to information sharing which constitute fundamental human rights. The study concluded by stating that the Nigerian government should revert the ban on Twitter and restore the digital right of Nigerian residents to the platform. The study recommended that democratic institutions should be more consolidated so that the rule of law can be guaranteed. In addition, given that Nigeria is said to be a democratic country, rather than infringing on rights to freedom of speech and expression by controlling, banning, or censoring social media activities, the Nigerian government can opt for press conferences, press releases, and even social media platforms to communicate with a larger crowd on brewing social issues.

The latest of the changes to education process is integration of information communication technology, which is a germane aspect of the 21 st century. This has made countries to formulate and implement policies that targets proper integration of ICT into their education sectors. Nigeria approved its own national policy on ICT in education in 2019 and one of the major objectives is to facilitate the development of technical infrastructures required to improve education service delivery. This work evaluated the achievement of this objective since the approval of this policy and its implication for teaching quality in public universities in the country. This research adopted both quantitative and qualitative research methods, thus making the findings robust. This study finds that there is a gap between the availability of the technical infrastructures and the policy expectations in this regard. The study thus recommends that some elements of the policy be reviewed, particular ones that concern finance and monitoring, because paucity of the former will impede availability of infrastructure and inadequacy of the latter will give room for misplaced priorities and misappropriation of the resources allotted to developing ICT infrastructure in the universities.

This work takes into consideration the envisaged challenges in the 2018 ICT in education policy which sought to alleviate the lagging state of ICT integration into education at all levels in Nigeria. It also investigated emerging challenges vis-à-vis what is obtainable in some other African countries. This study adopted a cross-sectional research design through the administration of 536 copies of the questionnaire to teaching and non-teaching staff of three public universities, namely

The need to learn foreign languages is as old as human existence itself and in several parts of the world, language education is deemed as important because language is perceived as a vehicle for the creation and maintenance of social relations. However, language education is not often considered with regards to refugees. This study therefore analyzes the role which language education plays in the social integration of Nigerian refugees in Cameroon. With the growing rate of voluntary and forced migration in recent times within West Africa, it has become known that the ability to rapidly learn and get familiar with the language of the host country plays a key role in the adaptability of refugees from one country in another and because of its indispensability, language plays a very important role in the social integration of refugees. This study therefore examines the effect of language education on the social integration of Nigerian refugees in Cameroon in view of the historical and socioeconomic linkages as well as the French-English dichotomy which exists between both countries. The study is largely qualitative, involving the extensive review of extant literature and analysis of relevant secondary data as well as the social integration theory as the framework for analysis. The study finds that language has a significant effect on the social integration of Nigerian refugees in Cameroon and language education is crucial for the successful integration of Nigerian refugees in Cameroon.

The 2016 American presidential elections in particular have become one of the most divisive trajectories because the social media became, in the hands of the two main candidates, Hillary and Trump, an effective tool of spreading hate, mischief and misinformation. Generally, politicians have swerved from the use of traditional media (broadcast and print) to the use of social media to car ry out their political ambition. This paper examines the role of social media in the awareness, participation, and mobilizing electorates during the 2016 presidential election. The method of analysis is descriptive and the data are drawn from secondary literature. One of the major challenges of electioneering in the 21st century is that, due to the faceless nature of the internet, social media spreads propagan...

At best, West Africans have regarded themselves as pre-colonial kinsmen but post-colonial strangers as a result of the factor of language barriers created in the years of colonial rule. The Yoruba, Ewe, Ashante, Mende, Temne and many more had similarities of languages and cultures and led a regular life of communal conflict and cooperation until the arrival of the French, English, Portuguese and Germans, who established sharp misunderstandings and divisions along the lines of European lingua franca. From a participation observation experience and perspective, and having consulted literature and government records on futile integration efforts, the...

Furthermore, it has been argued by some scholars that government agencies are more likely to achieve their goals of enhanced performance for the improvement in the living standard of the people, particularly in the provision of adequate social amenities such as clean water, electricity supply, good roads, well equipped hospitals and adequate security protection of lives and properties, where transparency on the part of public officials in the use of public resources, and trust about government agencies on the part of the people are the norms in such a society. Previous studies have hinged on transparency for enhanced performance of government and its agencies on the integrity and perception of the individual employees in carrying out their assignments without taking into consideration the l...

In recent years, however, international bodies, as well as the media, have raised deep concerns on the unimaginable horrors Sub-Saharan African migrants are forced to witness and experience during their stay and transit through Libya. It is against this background that this study through the ‘narrative research approach' sought to examine the various patterns of human rights violations experienced by African migrants in Libya as well as the role of the media in exposing the horrific trends of modern slavery. The study finds horrific patterns of human right violations perpetuated by both state and non-state actors in Libya. In addition, the media has played significant roles in serving as a major and reliable source of information on this phenomenal migration of the new age as well as a mediating body between policymakers and migrants. However, the complacency of governments whose ...
